At the stroke of the midnight on 14-15 August 1947, India secured independence. That moment also witnessed the tragic partition of India and birth of Pakistan. Nobody wanted it. Yet it couldn't be averted.
Four decades earlier, in 1905, Bengal was partitioned by the British. A massive movement, called Vande Mataram Movement, was launched against it by the Indian National Congress. British were forced to annul partition of Bengal in 1911.
A country that defeated the British designs to partition one province failed when the whole country was being partitioned four decades later. Why? What missteps had led to the disaster? Who were responsible?

मंज़रनामा पेश करने का एक उद्देश्य तो यह है कि पाठक इस फ़ॉर्म से रू-ब-रू हो सकें और दूसरा यह कि टी.वी. और सिनेमा में दिलचस्पी रखनेवाले लोग यह देख-जान सकें कि किसी कृति को किस तरह मंज़रनामे की शक्ल दी जाती है। टी.वी. की आमद से मंज़रनामों की ज़रूरत में बहुत इज़ाफ़ा हो गया है।
‘माचिस’ का मंज़रनामा पंजाब के उन हालात का चित्रण करता है जब वहाँ आतंकवाद का साया किसी अभिशाप की तरह मँडरा रहा था। ऐसे में सच और झूठ के बीच फ़र्क़ करना बहुत मुश्किल था। युवा पीढ़ी दिग्भ्रमित थी और व्यवस्था उसे समझने में चूक कर रही थी। पंजाब की हरियाली उदास थी और वहाँ की उमंगें घायल। विडम्बनाओं के भँवर में उलझी ज़िन्दगियों की मर्मस्पर्शी दास्तान प्रस्तुत करता यह मंज़रनामा बहुत ख़ास है।

- Description: This book by eminent journalist Aaku Srivastava, delves deep into the history of the politics of independent India with an aim to study the ups and downs of the regional parties arising with the contradictions and conflicts between the states against the ‘Centre’. These ‘contradictions’ first appeared in the early 1970s when local political forces in 7 to 8 states formed their own ‘united governments’ and offered localist alternatives to the ‘Centrist’ Congress policies. Linguistic and local cultural identities made this change possible. In the Centre too, two non-Congress parties and local parties formed governments. In the era of globalisation, this tendency of decentralisation became even more forceful and compelling. Perhaps that is why even now that Congress ‘centralism’ has been replaced by BJP, many localist identities keep clashing with BJP’s centralism as well.
