The Unreachable is an English translation of Gopinath Mohanty's Odia novella, Apahancha that tells the riveting story of a child belonging to Kondh tribe of Koraput in Odisha, whose exposure to modern education in post-independence India alienates him from his own community and makes him long for the glitter of the urban world. His growing disenchantment with life in the city and eventual return to his own village are vividly chronicled in this novel.

As the author himself says, this is not a jail diary. Nor is it an account of the Emergency. It is rather a ‘side light’ on the Emergency. Malkani writes about his experience of it—of what he, as a detenu, ‘saw, heard, thought and felt’ in prison. He spent the twenty-one months in three prisons— Hissar, Rohtak and Tihar—where he met a variety of people, from criminals to top-notch politicians. This is a very human document about them—sometimes amusing, sometimes sad, sometimes traumatic. The many hours of solitude in prison gave the author the opportunity to deeply analyse the Hindu-Muslim problem, towards which he has offered new and hopeful insights. The book is sensitively written, full of intimate anecdotes, not without political insight, and makes very interesting reading. It offers not only a personal viewpoint, but a glimpse into the lives of all detenus.

पुलिसवाले ने अपनी दकनी उर्दू में कहा, ‘‘आप लोकां बड़े ऊँचे हाकिमान हैं तो इस प्राइवेट कार में क्या करता मियाँ? पायलट लोग तो सरकारी गाड़ी में तकरीबन घंटा भर पहले गए। अब जरा तकलीफ करके नीचे उतर आओ। तुम्हारी पूरी दास्तान फुरसत से थाने में सुनेंगे।’’ मैंने बहुत समझाया, पर बात इस मुद्दे पर खत्म हुई कि मैं जो अपने को प्रेसिडेंट साहेब का पायलट बता रहा था, अपना आई.डी. कार्ड भी नहीं दिखा पा रहा था। फिर उसने भाई साहेब से पूछा, ‘‘और हजरत, आप तो जरूर प्राइम मिनिस्टर साहेब के खासुलखास ड्राइवर होंगे?’’ मैंने आवाज ऊँची करके कहा, ‘‘अपने सीनियर ऑफिसर से तुरंत वॉकी-टॉकी पर बात कराइए, वरना मेरी नौकरी तो जाएगी, पर आपकी भी बचेगी नहीं।’’ नतीजा उलटा निकला। त्योरियाँ चढ़ाकर वह बोला, ‘‘अरे, मेरे को धमकी देते? जाने दो प्रेसिडेंट साहेब को, फिर मैं देखता मियाँ कि तुम फाख्ता उड़ाते कि हवाई जहाज।’’ जीवन और मृत्यु के खेल से गुजर जाने के बाद इस उड़ान का अंत भी सदा की तरह सकुशल रूप से हो गया। राष्ट्रपति महोदय के जाने के बाद हमारे कप्तान ने पीठ ठोंकी। मैंने पूछा, ‘‘सर, क्या ईनाम दे रहे हैं आप मुझको?’’ अपनी घनी मूँछों के नीचे से मुसकराते हुए उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘बस किसी को बताऊँगा नहीं कि महामहिम राष्ट्रपतिजी हैदराबाद एयरपोर्ट पर खड़े होकर आज महामहिम फ्लाइट लेफ्टिनेंट वर्मा की प्रतीक्षा करने के दंड से बच गए।’’ —इसी उपन्यास से

The Inscrutable Mystery (Chidambara Rahasya), which won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1985, is a rare novel with dimensions that had been unheard of in Kannada Literature. The novel chronicles the tale of Kesaruru from the perspective of a free, sensitive, and poetic mind that responds to the condition of the land. With the suspense of a detective novel only as an excuse, the novel pictures the variegated life in Kesaruru with rationalism and the revolutionary yellings of some youth on one side and people who are steeped in superstition, people like Angaadi who are after strange research findings on the other, and the inferno that threatens to engulf Kesaruru as a result of their friction. The innocent love between Jayanti and Rafi, who strive to get out of the stifling firestorm engulfing Kesaruru, stands out as the only redeeming hope for Kesaruru. The novel is a tribute to the author's narrative skills as much as his ability to depict reality in all its sordid detail.

The River of Blood (Kuruthippunal) was first published in Tamil in 1975. As a work of art, the novel stands testimony to the multifaceted personality of its author. The novel is based on the Keezhavenmani carnage of 1967 in which 42 Harijans were burnt to death in landlord-peasant clash. To the agrarian problem, tinged with untouchablity, Indira Parthasarthy gives a psychological dimension, which is the unique aspects of the book. Parthasarthy has beautiful highlighted the degradation in the field of politics and the corruption having assumed the way of life.

एक विद्यालय जिसमें है भूतों का डेरा। कभी कोई सफेद कपड़ों में भागता दिखाई देता है, तो कोई पेड़ों को खराब कर देता है, कोई किसी बच्चे का गला दबा देता है तो कोई किसी बच्चे को बेहोश कर देता है। एक दिन वहाँ के हेडमास्टर मर जाते हैं और भूत बनकर विद्यालय में ही भटकने लगते हैं। अब बाकी भूत मास्टर जी पर भारी पड़ेंगे या मास्टर जी उन भूतों को भगा देंगे। क्या होगा जब बंटी भूतिया मास्साब से दोस्ती करने की कोशिश करेगा या जेलर सफल होगा अपने कुत्सित प्रयासों में।
