साहस, शौर्य, नेतृत्व, कर्मठता, वीरता, निर्भयता-किसी एक व्यक्ति में इन सबका समुच्चय होना कठिन होता है, लगभग दुर्लभ। परंतु भारत में शौर्य के प्रतीक हैं हमारे राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा सलाहकार श्री अजीत डोभाल। वह भारतीय पुलिस सेवा के सबसे सम्मानित अधिकारियों में से एक हैं। 'परम वीर चक्र' के बाद दूसरा सर्वोच्च वीरता पुरस्कार ' कीर्ति चक्र' पानेवाले पहले पुलिस अधिकारी हैं। उन्होंने अनेक कठिन और खतरों से भरे हुए ऑपरेशंस का सफल संचालन व नेतृत्व कर भारतवर्ष की अखंडता को अक्षुण्ण रखने में अप्रतिम योगदान दिया है। उन्होंने मिजोरम विद्रोह में एक फील्ड ऑपरेटिव के रूप में नाम कमाया, जहाँ उन्होंने विद्रोही नेता लालडेंगा को काबू किया। सन्‌ 1989 में उन्होंने अमृतसर में स्वर्ण मंदिर से आतंकवादियों को निकालने के लिए ' ऑपरेशन ब्लैक थंडर' में पंजाब पुलिस एवं राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा गार्ड के साथ एक आई.बी. टीम का नेतृत्व किया। भारत में इसलामी आतंकवाद के खिलाफ महत्त्वपूर्ण अभियानों को उन्होंने दिशा दी और सन्‌ 1993 में मुंबई बम धमाकों के बाद अंडरवर्ल्ड गैंगस्टर दाऊद इब्राहिम को पकड़ने के लिए बनाई गई टीम का नेतृत्व भी किया। 1999 में एयर इंडिया की फ्लाइट को अपहत करके कंधार लेकर गए आतंकियों से यात्रियों की रिहाई के लिए हुई वार्त्ता के भी वह हिस्सा रहे। सर्जिकल स्ट्राइक, डोकलाम विवाद, अनुच्छेद 370 हटने के बाद कश्मीर में हालात पर नियंत्रण, म्याँमार में सैन्य ऑपरेशन इत्यादि जैसे दर्जनों साहसिक अभियान उनके नाम हैं। राष्ट्र की सुरक्षा और सम्मान को सर्वोपरि माननेवाले, दृढ़ एवं कठोर निर्णय लेने में किंचित्‌ न झिझकने वाले, अजीत डोभालजी की यह प्रेरक जीवनी उनके समर्पित राष्ट्र- जीवन की एक झलक मात्र है।

"दौड़कर उसने कृष्ण के पाँव से तीर खींचने के लिए हाथ बढ़ाया । कृष्ण उसकी व्यग्रता को निमिष- भर ताकते रहे, फिर निषेध में दाहिना हाथ उठाया । जरा ठिठक गया- '' क्यों, नाथ, क्यों?'' '' मेरा नाम ?. .जरा ! '' '' जरा !. .ठीक!'' कृष्ण का मधुर हास्य छलका । तलवे से बहकर रक्‍तधारा भूमि पर काफी दूर चली गई थी । '' जरा, तुम्हारा नाम सार्थक है, तात ! ' जरा ' कभी किसीको नहीं छोड़ती ! अमरत्व के अभिशाप ने जिसे घेरा हो, उसे भी महाकाल जरा समेट ही लेता है न! जरा, तू तो निमित्त मात्र है, वत्स!'' - इसी उपन्यास से कोई भी भारतीय भाषा ऐसी नहीं है जिसमें श्रीकृष्ण को केंद्र में रखकर काव्य, कहानी, उपन्यास. नाटक, संदर्भ-ग्रंथ आदि साहित्य का सर्जन न किया गया हो । ' श्याम, फिर एक बार तुम मिल जाते ' (मूल गुजराती में लिखा) उपन्यास इन सबसे अनूठा इसलिए है कि यह सिर्फ उपन्यास नहीं है-यह तो उपनिषद् है! यथार्थ कहा जाए तो यह उपनिषदीय उपन्यास है । तत्कालीन आर्यावर्त्त में श्रीकृष्ण एक विराट‍् व्यक्‍त‌ित्व था । जब यह व्यक्‍त‌ित्व अनंत में विलीन हो गया तो जो सन्नाटा छा गया, उस सन्नाटे के चीत्कार का यह आलेखन है जब श्रीकृष्ण सम्मुख थे तब बात और थी जब वे विलीन हो गए तब वसुदेव-देवकी से लेकर अर्जुन, द्रौपदी, अश्‍वत्थामा, अक्रूर उद्धव और राधा पर्यंत पात्रों की संभ्रमिद मनोदशा को एक अनूठी ऊँचाई के ऊपर ले जाता है यह उपन्यास । "
