सार्वजनिक स्पेस में स्त्री की आमद भारतीय समाज में एक समानान्तर प्रक्रिया रही है जिसके लिए सारी लड़ाइयाँ स्त्रियों ने ख़ुद लड़ी हैं, बेशक कुछ सहृदय और सुविवेकी पुरुषों का सहयोग भी उन्हें अपनी जगह बनाने में मिलता रहा। रंगमंच के संसार में स्त्रियों का प्रवेश भी इससे कुछ अलग नहीं रहा। बल्कि यह कुछ और कठिन था। शुचिताबोध से त्रस्त जो भारतीय समाज दर्शक-दीर्घा में स्त्रियों के बैठने की भी अलग व्यवस्था चाहता था, वह भला उन्हें मंच पर उतरने की छूट कैसे देता? आज की यह वस्तुस्थिति कि अधिकांश मध्यवर्गीय अभिभावक बेटी को फ़िल्म में जाते देख फूले फिरेंगे, एक अलग चीज़ है, इसे न तो मंच पर आने के लिए स्त्री ने जो संघर्ष किया, उसका ईनाम कह सकते हैं और न यह कि मध्य-वर्ग स्त्री को लेकर हर पूर्वग्रह से मुक्त हो चुका है, यह उसकी किसी और ग्रन्थि का नतीजा है।
समाज की और जगहों पर स्त्री ने जैसे अपनी दावेदारी पेश की, मंच पर और परदे पर भी उसने सम्मानित जगह ख़ुद ही बनाई। यह किताब स्त्री की इसी यात्रा का लेखा-जोखा है। पुस्तक का मानना है कि रंगमंच का डेढ़ सौ वर्षों का इतिहास स्त्रियों के लिए जहाँ बहुत संघर्षमय रहा, वहीं रंगमंच ने उनके लिए एक माध्यम का भी काम किया जहाँ से उनकी इच्छाओं और आकांक्षाओं, पीड़ा और वंचनाओं को वाणी मिली।
पारसी रंगमंच ने, जो भारत में लोकप्रिय रंगमंच का पहला चरण है, इस सन्दर्भ में बहुत बड़ी भूमिका निभाई और भविष्य के लिए आधार तैयार किया। जनाना भूमिका करनेवाले पुरुषों ने उस स्पेस को रचा जहाँ से स्त्रियाँ इस दुनिया में प्रवेश कर सकीं। उन्होंने न सिर्फ़ स्त्रीत्व को एक नया आयाम दिया बल्कि घर के आँगन के बाहर सैकड़ों निगाहों के सामने स्त्री की मौजूदगी क्या होती है, इसका पूर्वाभ्यास समाज को कराया।
ऐसे कई चरण रहे, जिनसे रंगमंच की स्त्री को आज के अपने स्थान पर पहुँचने के लिए गुज़रना पड़ा। यह किताब विभिन्न आयामों से उन तमाम परिस्थितियों और यात्राओं का आधिकारिक ब्यौरा देती है।

- Description: उनके जीवन के लगभग अड़सठ वर्ष (1929–1997) रचनाकर्म को समर्पित। कविता, उपन्यास, संस्मरण, यात्रावृत्त, निबन्ध, बाल–साहित्य आदि सभी विधाओं में उन्होंने लिखा। हिन्दी के अलावा मैथिली, बांग्ला और संस्कृत में भी उन्होंने न सिर्फ़ मौलिक रचनाएँ कीं, इन भाषाओं से अनुवाद भी किए। कुछ पत्र–पत्रिकाओं में उन्होंने स्तम्भ-लेखन भी किया। रचनावली के प्रथम खंड में बाबा की उन सभी कविताओं को संकलित किया गया है, जिनका रचनाकाल 1967 ई. तक है। ‘युगधारा’, ‘सतरंगे पंखोंवाली’, ‘प्यासी पथराई आँखें’, ‘तुमने कहा था’, ‘हज़ार–हज़ार बाँहोंवाली’, ‘पुरानी जूतियों का कोरस’, ‘रत्नगर्भ’, ‘इस गुब्बारे की छाया में’ तथा ‘भूल जाओ पुराने सपने’—इन संग्रहों से 1967 तक की सभी कविताओं को कालक्रम से यहाँ ले लिया गया है। इसके अलावा नागार्जुन के सर्वाधिक प्रिय कवि कालिदास की रचना ‘मेघदूत’ का उनके द्वारा मुक्तछन्द में किया गया अनुवाद भी इसमें संकलित है। यह अनुवाद 1953 में ‘साप्ताहिक हिन्दुस्तान’ के एक ही अंक में प्रकाशित हुआ। इसके बाद 1955 में पुस्तकाकार प्रकाशन के समय इसमें एक लम्बी भूमिका और कुछ पादटिप्पणियाँ भी जोड़ी गर्इं। रचनावली में वह इसी रूप में उपलब्ध है।
