"गौतम बुद्ध तथागत नाम से भी जाने गए। गौतम बुद्ध ने अपने सिद्धांतों के प्रचार-प्रसार में जाति व्यवस्था का भी घोर विरोध किया था। उन्होंने मानव-मानव की समानता पर बल दिया। उन्होंने जन्म को न मानकर बुद्धि तथा चरित्र के आधार को छोटे-बड़े होने का मापदंड माना है। उन्होंने घोषणा भी की थी कि मनुष्य जन्म से नहीं, अपितु कर्म से ब्राह्मण अथवा शूद्र होता है।
गौतम बुद्ध द्वारा अनेक ऐसी बातों का प्रचार किया गया, जो आज भी मानव को एक-दूसरे से प्रेम, सद्भाव, दया और भाईचारे का संदेश देती हैं। इन्हीं संदेशों से प्रेरित गौतम बुद्ध की अनेक कथाएँ समाज-जीवन में प्रचलित हैं, जो मानव को असीम ज्ञान की ओर प्रेरित करती हैं।
