अपने समय के कुछ मूर्धन्य लेखकों, चित्रकारों और संगीतकारों के साथ बातचीत करने का अवसर मिलना हर तरह से सौभाग्य कहा जाएगा। ऐसी बातचीत में अकसर किसी व्यक्ति की जिन्दगी, दृष्टि, उलझनों और उत्सुकताओं के अनेक अनजाने पहलुओं से साक्षात् हो पाता है। इनमें से अधिकांश साक्षात्कार ‘आलोचना’ (त्रैमासिक) और ‘पूर्वग्रह’ में प्रकाशित हुए थे। उनका शुरू से ही आग्रह अनौपचारिक आलोचना को भी जगह देने का था और ये उसी का हिस्सा थे। तब जानबूझकर बातचीत का स्वाद बनाए रखने के लिए उसे लगभग जस का तस दे दिया जाता था। इतने बरसों बाद अब शायद इसलिए कहीं-कहीं अटपटापन लगे, पर उस समय के स्वाद का भी पता चले, इसलिए उस सामग्री में नोक-पलक सुधारने की कोशिश नहीं के बराबर की गई है।
कई बार बातचीत मैंने अकेले नहीं की है। उसमें नामवर सिंह, विजयदेव नारायण साही, रमेशचन्द्र शाह, राहुल बारपुते, भगवत रावत, गीता कपूर, मंगलेश डबराल, उदय प्रकाश, सुदीप बनर्जी, सत्येन कुमार, ज्योत्स्ना मिलन, मदन सोनी, उदयन वाजपेयी भी शामिल थे। जो परिसंवाद शामिल किया गया है उसमें कुँवर नारायण, नेमिचन्द्र जैन, रघुवीर सहाय, कमलेश, जगदीश स्वामीनाथन, विजय मोहन सिंह भी शामिल थे। इन सभी के प्रति कृतज्ञता। उनकी शिरकत से कई बातचीतें अनेक दृष्टियों का समवाय भी बन पाई हैं।
जिनसे बातचीत की गई थी उनमें से जैनेन्द्र कुमार, आचार्य हजारीप्रसाद द्विवेदी, शमशेर बहादुर सिंह, रघुवीर सहाय, निर्मल वर्मा, पण्डित कुमार गन्धर्व और चेस्लाव मीलोष अब इस संसार में नहीं हैं।
पहली बातचीत 1976 की है और आखि़री 2006 की। अगर बातचीत को एक निजी विश्लेषण और आकलन मानें तो यह लगभग 30 वर्षों में फैला ऐसा दस्तावेज़ है जो उसे एकत्र करता है।—भूमिका से

- Description: 'आपका बंटी' मन्नू भंडारी की अत्यन्त चर्चित और हिन्दी उपन्यासों के इतिहास में मील का पत्थर मानी जानेवाली कृति है। टूटते परिवारों के बीच बच्चों को किस मानसिक यातना से गुज़रना पड़ता है, इस उपन्यास में उसे लगभग दस्तावेज़ी ढंग से अंकित किया गया है। जिस संवेदनशीलता और स्नेह से मन्नू जी इस चरित्र और उसके मानसिक जीवन को लिख पाईं, वह हिन्दी में दुबारा सम्भव नहीं हो सका। बंटी के माता-पिता सम्बन्ध-विच्छेद के बाद अलग-अलग रहते हैं और बाद मे अपना-अपना घर बसा लेते हैं। इस पूरी प्रक्रिया में बंटी को किसी भी घर में वह अपनापा महसूस नहीं होता जो उसे उसके माता-पिता एक साथ रहकर दे सकते थे। अन्त में बंटी को छात्रावास भेज दिया जाता है। इस पुस्तक में इस उपन्यास पर स्वयं मन्नू जी द्वारा लिखित फ़िल्म-पटकथा प्रकाशित की जा रही है। यहाँ यह जान लेना ज़रूरी है कि 'आपका बंटी’ को लेकर 1986 में 'समय की धारा' नाम से जो फ़िल्म बनी, यह उसकी पटकथा नहीं है। 'समय की धारा’ जिसमें शबाना आज़मी, शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा और विनोद मेहरा ने अभिनय किया, उस पर अपने उपन्यास को ग़लत ढंग से प्रस्तुत करने के लिए मन्नू जी ने अदालत में मामला दायर किया था। इसमें अन्त में बंटी की मृत्यु दिखाई गई थी। मुक़दमे का फ़ैसला मन्नू जी के पक्ष में रहा था। इस पुस्तक में प्रस्तुत पटकथा स्वयं मन्नू जी ने लिखी थी जिस पर फ़िल्म नहीं बन पाई, इसलिए पाठक इस प्रस्तुति को इस पुस्तक में ही पढ़ सकते हैं| अपने उपन्यास को दृश्यों में बदलते समय इस पटकथा में मन्नू जी ने एक सिद्धहस्त पटकथा लेखक होने का परिचय दिया है।
