'अगरिया' शब्द का अभिप्राय सम्भवत: आग पर काम करने वाले लोगों से है अथवा आदिवासियों के देवता, अघासुर से जिनका जन्म लौ से हुआ माना जाता है। अगरिया मध्य भारत के लोहा पिघलानेवाले और लोहारी करनेवाले लोग हैं जो अधिकतर मैकाल पहाड़ी क्षेत्र में पाए जाते हैं लेकिन 'अगरिया क्षेत्र' को डिंडोरी से लेकर नेतरहाट तक रेखांकित किया जा सकता है। गोंड, बैगा और अन्य आदिवासियों से मिलते-जुलते रिवाजों और आदतों के कारण अगरिया की जीवन-शैली पर बहुत कम अध्ययन किया गया है। हालाँकि उनके पास अपनी एक विकसित टोटमी सभ्यता है और मिथकों का अकूत भंडार भी, जो उन्हें भौतिक सभ्यता से बचाकर रखता है और उन्हें जीवनी-शक्ति देता है। इस पुस्तक के बहाने यह श्रेय प्रमुख नृतत्त्वशास्त्री वेरियर एलविन को जाता है कि उन्होंने अगरिया जीवन और संस्कृति को इसमें अध्ययन का विषय बनाया है। एलविन के ही शब्दों में, ‘मिथक और शिल्प का संगम ही इस अध्ययन का केन्द्रीय विषय है जो अगरिया को विशेष महत्त्व प्रदान करता है।‘ इसके विभिन्न अध्यायों में अगरिया इतिहास, संख्या और विस्तार, मिथक, टोना-टोटका, शिल्प, आर्थिक स्थिति और पतन की चर्चा एवं विश्लेषण के माध्यम से एक वैविध्यपूर्ण संस्कृति, जिसका अब पतन हो चुका है, की आश्चर्यजनक आन्तरिक झाँकी प्रदान की गई है।

रघुवीर सहाय की रचनाएँ आधुनिक समय की धड़कनों का जीवन्त दस्तावेज़ हैं। इसीलिए छह खंडों में प्रकाशित उनकी रचनावली में आज का समय सम्पूर्णता में परिभाषित हुआ है। अपनी अद्वितीय सर्जनशीलता के कारण रघुवीर सहाय ऐसे कालजयी रचनाकारों में हैं जिनकी प्रासंगिकता समय बीतने के साथ बढ़ती ही जाती है।
‘फिर उन्हीं लोगों से’ शीर्षक रचनावली के इस पहले खंड में रघुवीर सहाय की 1946 से 1990 तक की प्रकाशित-अप्रकाशित सम्पूर्ण कविताएँ संकलित हैं। इस खंड में शामिल कविता-संग्रहों के नाम हैं : ‘सीढ़ियों पर धूप में’ (1960), ‘आत्महत्या के विरुद्ध’ (1967), ‘हँसो, हँसो जल्दी हँसो’ (1975 ), ‘लोग भूल गए हैं’ (1982), ‘कुछ पते कुछ चिट्ठियाँ ' (1989) तथा ‘एक समय था’ (1995)। इन संग्रहों के अलावा बाद में मिली कुछ नई अप्रकाशित कविताएँ भी इस खंड में हैं। संग्रह के परिशिष्ट में ‘यह दुनिया बहुत बड़ी है, जीवन लम्बा है', शीर्षक से रघुवीर सहाय की सैकड़ों आरम्भिक कविताएँ संकलित हैं। रघुवीर सहाय ने अपने जीवनकाल में ही अपनी आरम्भिक कविताओं का संग्रह तैयार किया था, लेकिन अब तक यह अप्रकाशित था। कवि के काव्य-विकास को समझने की दृष्टि से यह सामग्री अत्यन्त महत्त्वपूर्ण है। परिशिष्ट में ही रघुवीर सहाय की बरस-दर-बरस ज़िन्दगी का ख़ाक़ा और सैकड़ों वर्षों का उनका वंश-वृक्ष भी दिया गया है। अपने नए कथ्य और शिल्प के कारण रघुवीर सहाय ने हिन्दी कविता को नया रूप दिया है। इस खंड की कविताओं में आप उस नए रूप को आसानी से पहचान सकते हैं।
