This book is a collection of well-researched 66 articles by R.K. Sinha. The writer has taken special care to ensure there is no deviation from the theme of the subject. This is not the only introduction of the book. I would like to narrate a short story to unfold R.K. Sinha’s background as a journalist. I was in Patna some time back. I rang up my old friend and colleague, Surendra Kishore and visited his new house. Rather than calling him to meet me at some central place in Patna, I preferred to visit him at his new house. The reason was that Surendra Kishore is one of the few journalists who has his ‘reference library’ built over decades with great care and interest. I wanted to see it. When we were in conversation, it was difficult to miss a reference to ‘Yathavat’, a fortnightly magazine in Hindi published from Delhi, which I edit, and R.K. Sinha is its Chairman. When Sinha’s name cropped up in discussion, Surendra Kishore recalled an incident, some 50 years ago, which proved a turning point in the life of Suendraji. In the 1960s, R.K. Sinha, who listed his full name in the credit line as ‘Ravindra Kishore Sinha’, was an icon among journalists then. There was flow and consistency in R.K. Sinha’s writings. Impressed by Sinha’s style of journalism, Surendraji added Kishore in his surname and from ‘Surendra Akela’ he became Surendra Kishore. —Rambahadur Rai

The Dharmic traditions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism – share much in common, not with standing a number of variations among them. In all these traditions, the scriptures, writings, and practices hold compassion as an integral part and a supreme virtue. This collection of essays by leading scholars from different disciplines aptly captures the religious and spiritual dimensions of these traditions as they relate to compassion. Most of the authors are practitioner-scholars and experts in their respective disciplines, including the sciences, humanities, social sciences, law, and religion. The experts met in September 2014 at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, for two days of lively deliberations under the auspices of the Uberoi Foundation for Religious Studies, which was established to spread awareness and promote understanding of the Dharmic traditions throughout North America. After addressing the ‘central and fundamental’ knowledge of these traditions and the common features and interactions among them, the essays here discuss compassion from various perspectives, such as relationship with the natural world and the environment, selfless service, and the treatment of animals. A final set of essays sheds light on the significance of compassion in each of these Dharmic traditions. As a comparative study, this unique collection presents a clear picture of the central theme of moral and compassionate conduct in the Dharmic traditions.

Nine years have passed since the ethnic conflict ended in Sri Lanka. The hope that Sri Lankan refugees would return to the island has been belied. This book highlights the dilemma faced by Sri Lankan Tamil refugees amid the twists and turns in Indo-Sri Lankan relations. The global refugee phenomenon and the Indian experience, the movement of Sri Lankan refugees to different parts of the world, the rise and fall of the Tamil Tigers and the competitive nature of Sinhala politics, which stands in the way of ethnic reconciliation, are analysed in detail. The peculiar problems faced by refugees of Indian origin are highlighted. The Author pleads for the enactment of a National Refugee Law that should balance the humanitarian concerns of refugees with the security interests of the Indian State.

Day one. This has its own history. Are these questions raised due to ignorance of the constitution? If so, then this book opens the windows and doors to a constitution that has been satirically described as a ‘paradise for lawyers’. It creates the possibility for vital air. From the experience of the editors, it can be said that even prominent lawyers are unaware of the constitution because it is extremely complex. How can it become comprehensible? Anyone wishing to address this question will find more than enough material in this book. The complexity of the constitution is another reason why it could not become a beloved text for the ordinary citizen. Just as a citizen believes in their religious book, the constitution should serve as the religious text for the system of governance. Until this occurs, deliberations should continue. Any discussion is only relevant and successful when it addresses the core question: how can the fundamental issue regarding the constitution of India be recognized in discussions? The answer to this is extremely simple. India has its own character, its own culture, and it also has its own distortions. We can only understand our distortions and character under the torchlight of our culture. It is under this light that we must create our present times. Our current constitution defines the religion of our state. How Indian or un-Indian is this constitution, essentially? The process of the formation of this constitution should be scrutinized based on logic, and both its past and present should be examined. This is why this book is titled: Revisiting Our Constitution. This book is a collection of well-researched essays that explore the constitution. Academic efforts have been made in this book to analyze and perceive the constitution from the perspective of ‘Ram Rajya’. A single-government system emerges from the constitution. Ram Rajya has been considered the ultimate ideal of any governance system in India. Mahatma Gandhi also stated that Ram Rajya was the goal of Independent India. On the sesquicentennial year of Gandhi, the noted academic journal Manthan has taken on the responsibility of reviewing the journey of India’s constitution. This effort is not as simple and easy as it might seem. In reality, it is difficult and complex.

India has a long history of economic and cultural engagement with the world. Over the last many centuries, India's economic and cultural bonds with the world have weakened. Over the last 4 years, diplomacy has been linked to development—developing India and helping the world achieve sustainable growth as defined by the UN’s 2030 Agenda. This book outlines the policies of the Narendra Modi government in rebuilding and rejuvenating economic and cultural bonds with the world.

The Congress Party has often spoken about fascism and fascist tendencies. The leaders of this party have always accused other leaders of fascist tendencies. But the reality is entirely different. The three chapters in this book provide a chilling account of this party's contempt for democratic traditions and its dalliance with dictatorship. This is an eye-opener for most Indian citizens, who are unaware of the incidents quoted in this book. All in all, this is an exposé to alert citizens and to make them eternally vigilant so that the core values in the Indian Constitution and the democratic traditions remain intact.

This book is about fundamental issues that define our country's development course. In a diverse cross-section of topics, the author discusses in his inimitable style the fundamental flaws that have beset the nation's relentless march to progress and prosperity. He also elaborates how a shift in the positions of individual members of society on different issues could cause a qualitative difference in the course of events and thereby lead to a better tomorrow. The articles compiled in this book have already appeared in social media on the authors writing platform (drsunilgupta.com) and won wide acclaim. Endowed with the right balance of insight and prowess owing to the extensive exposure and rich experience gained in his professional capacity in the corporate, economic and social sectors, the author has been able to do justice to the task at hand. Not written with any particular section or group of persons in mind, the book aims to pique the interest, curiosity and conscience of the individual reader and thereby motivate him to think and then inspire him to act for the inclusive and sustainable development of our nation. Being an inalienable and intricate part of society, the individual's thought pattern will make all the difference in the final shaping of our country's destiny. And that, dear reader, is the undercurrent of the brook of the author's thoughts that this book tries to encapsulate.

"India is home to hundreds of tribal communities, each with their own unique cultures, traditions and ways of life. Among these are the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), who are identified as being at risk of losing their distinct identities, livelihoods and traditional practices. This book takes an in-depth look at the PVTGs residing in the state of Jharkhand through the analytical lens of anthropology. It consists of untold stories on its indigenous people as a tribute to their reliance, wisdom and unwavering Spirit. Through a chronological exploration, the book aims to understand the pivotal role played in shaping regional identity with political historicity, livelihood practices, indigenous knowledge, dynamic interest with local life and to investigate the indigenous’ contribution. The authors evaluate current policies related to the preservation and empowerment of PVTGs. The book highlights the urgent need to protect and uplift these ancient but vulnerable communities before their irreplaceable cultures are lost forever."

Maoism in India is an attempt to study and analyse the movement. Already, a number of left intellectuals and scholars have studied the movement and written about it. My attempt has been to find out the difference between the Naxalite and CPI (Maoist) movements. Is there any difference as such? Though the Naxalite movement was born in Naxalbari in 1967, it is still striving to build a sustainable support base. The Naxalite movement got its name from Naxalbari village, where the first major uprising took place. Also, through the merger of the People’s War and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), the Communist Party of India (Maoist) was formed in 2004, which aims to overthrow the government of India through people’s war. Why an organization which was perceived as the forum of the “deprived and alienated sections of the population” described as “the single biggest internal security challenge”. Usually, people confuse Maoists and Naxalites and cannot clearly distinguish between the two terms. The media simply adds to the confusion. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) aims to overthrow the government of India through people’s war. I also tried to find out the reasons that led the Maoists, in recent times, to focus more on arms intervention than on organising a mass resistance movement.

The republication of the book, Rohtas Garh, by Wopendranath Ghosh, a member of the Bengal Provincial Civil Service in the early decades of the twentieth century, is an important step in this direction. The book was first published in 1908 and derives from the author’s sincere and keen interest in the history of the notable places with which he came into contact during the course of his service. This deeply researched book is about Rohtas Garh Fort, an important historical and cultural site in Bihar, located in the present-day Rohtas district. It has a history connected with the ancient, medieval and modern history of Bihar. The place in ancient India is associated with the exploits of Satyavadi Raja Harishchandra, who is famous for his love of truth and charity. A must-read classic book for people who have an interest in history.

Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya was an Indian philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and political scientist. He went on to define an alternative philosophy of development called Integral Humanism and led the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the present-day Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Pandit Deendayal’s philosophy continues to inspire and guide the policies of the BJP government at the centre and the state. This book presents a roadmap for the redevelopment and reconstruction of a nation as diverse and vast as India, based on the ideas and writings of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. The roadmap takes into account India’s unique history, culture and ethos. This book is also a tribute to a rishi like Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya on his 100th birth anniversary.

‘Bharat first’ is in many sense a trendsetting book. As a pioneering text, it deals with the transparent vision of one of the chief architects of the nation Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar with authentic evidences. The wholistic panorama of the then Bharat in logically embroidered chapterisation with Persnickety precision breaks the conventional barriers raised against the real personality of Dr. Ambedkar. The book is among the very few books that explores versatile character of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar with proper evidences and arguments. For future researchers, these well examined articles would play the role of foundational stones in the search of real personality of Constitutional architect of ‘BHARAT, that is India’.

It was a court battle between the first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru and Organiser, an English weekly backed by the RSS that led to restrictions on freedom of expression which we are debating today. The RSS had defended the sacred Sikh Shrine ‘Darbar Sahib’ at Amritsar twice when Muslim League led mobs attacked it in 1947. Did you know that one single anti-India and pro-China book ‘India’s China War’ written by Anglo-Australian journalist Neville Maxwell shaped the global narrative against India for more than five decades. It was a Swedish journalist Bertil Lintner who challenged it and turned the tables on Chinese propaganda with his book ‘China’s India War’ but even Indians don’t talk about it. Everyone remembers the 1962 war when India lost to China but there was another war in 1967 on Sikkim border where India took the revenge of 1967 and defeated China. Most of us don’t even know about this great victory! Indians have been made to remember the 1962 defeat and forget the glorious victory of 1967. Many such stories which comprise the forgotten history of India are part of this book. This forgotten history of India has been buried deep down in the dusty archives waiting to be told.

It is a story of a boy, Aditya, who struggles hard to achieve his dreams despite many odds. The novel takes the reader through Aditya's early childhood adventures to success in school and college. The college trekking expedition to the Himalayas takes the reader through beautiful, unique experiences of the Himalayas, where Aditya wins his love. It describes ways to understand the world differently and even touches on various social issues prevalent in India, like caste, religion, child abuse, corruption and inflation. The final part talks of the inner voice and mysticism of the universal soul, which is considered a great guiding force for a human being, provided he lowers his defence mechanisms to hear it. It is a philosophical, psychological and motivational story. This book won't let its reader lose the battle of life. It equips them to understand the world better and never get used by anybody. A self-motivating novel will provide energy to its readers to excel and succeed in life, especially those searching for their dream.
