हिंदी के प्रथम गद्यकार सदल मिश्र का जन्म 1767 (अनुमानित) में आरा (बिहार) में हुआ था। फोर्ट विलियम कॉलेज, कलकत्ता में भाषा मुंशी के पद पर रहते हुए सदल मिश्र ने जॉर्ज गिलक्रिस्ट के कहने पर 'नासिकेतोपाख्यान' व 'रामचरित' लिखा। उन्होंने हिंदी को खड़ी बोली बनाया, जिसमें संस्कृत का प्रभाव कम था। सदल मिश्र ने हिंदी-परशियन शब्दकोश भी बनाया। उनकी मुख्य कृतियाँ हैं—'नासिकेतोपाख्यान' या 'चंद्रावती' (1803), 'रामचरित' (1806), 'फूलन्ह के बिछोने', 'सोनम के थंभ', 'चहुँदसि', 'बरते थे', 'बाजने लगा', 'काँदती हैं', 'गाँछों'।

पत्रों की अपनी एक उष्मा होती है, जो अब मोबाइल और मेल के ज़माने में दुर्लभ है। इन पत्रों को पढ़ते हुए हम वह उष्मा भी महसूस करते हैं, और नामवर सिंह की दृष्टि की बारीकी से भी परिचित होते हैं।
पुस्तक में समीक्षा ठाकुर लिखित दो आलेख भी शामिल किए गए हैं। इनमें उन्होंने अपने पिता नामवर, हिन्दी के महान आलोचक नामवर, सबके चहेते नामवर, और वक्ता नामवर के साथ नामवर जी के जीवन के कई पहलुओं पर रौशनी डाली है। एक पठनीय और संग्रहणीय पुस्तक!

हमारे समाज में निचले तबक़े के लोगों के लिए कुछ भी ऐसा बाक़ी नहीं रहता जिसकी कोई अहमियत हो। यह इसलिए क्योंकि निर्णय वे लेते हैं जो समाज के ‘पिरामिड’ की चोटी पर विराजमान हैं। इसलिए यह पुस्तक उस पिरामिड को सीधा करने की कोशिश करती है। यह आधुनिकता की व्याख्या को भी बदलने का प्रयास करती है।
यह कहना यथेष्ट होगा कि यह पुस्तक उन लोगों के लिए है जो हमारे पूरे संसार की चिन्ता करते हैं, केवल शिक्षा-व्यवस्था की नहीं। यह एक ऐसे व्यक्ति के लम्बे अनुभव और विचारों को दर्शाती है जो शान्तिवाद की मुहिम में प्रत्यक्ष रूप से लगा हुआ था।
