जीवन के लिए जल एक अनिवार्य पदार्थ है। वनस्पति की उत्पत्ति और कृषि जल पर ही निर्भर है। हमारा देश कृषि-प्रधान देश है, इसलिए खेती के लिए वांछित जल की आवश्यकता सदा बनी रहती है। मनुष्य के जीवन के लिए और खेती बाड़ी के लिए हमें नदियों, तालाबों और कुओं से जल मिलता है। नदियाँ अथवा तालाब प्रत्येक गाँव, क़स्बे तथा नगर में उपलब्ध नहीं हैं और सरलता से हर कहीं बनाए भी नहीं जा सकते, इसलिए पानी की आवश्यकता को पूरा करने के लिए लोग कुआँ खोदते हैं।
हमारे देश में प्राचीनकाल में ही समाजसेवी विद्वान मनुष्यों की इस परम और अनिवार्य आवश्यकता का अनुभव कर भू-गर्भ के जल का पता लगाने के अनेक प्रयास और प्रयोग भू-भागों में निरन्तर चलते रहे। इस विषय का जो ग्रन्थ मुद्रित उपलब्ध होता है, वह आचार्य वराहमिहिर की ‘वृहत्-संहिता’ है। ‘वृहत्-संहिता’ ज्योतिष का ग्रन्थ है।
इस ग्रन्थ का 53वाँ अध्याय—दृकार्गल है। इसमें भू-गर्भ के जल का ज्ञान करने, पता लगाने की विधि बताई गई है। वराहमिहिर ने इस विज्ञान को दृकार्गल कहा है, जिसका अर्थ है भूमि के अन्दर के जल (उदक, दक) का लकड़ी की छड़ी के माध्यम से निश्चय करना, पता लगाना।
आचार्य वराहमिहिर ने पानी की खोज में जिन विषयों-विज्ञानों को आधार बनाया है। इस पुस्तक का अनुवाद करने में आवश्यक था कि उन विज्ञानों के जानकार विद्वानों से चर्चा की जाए और आधुनिक विज्ञान कहाँ तक पुरानी खोजों और प्रयोगों का समर्थन करते हैं।
