"वर्ष 1890 के वसंत में मैंने बोलना सीखा। मेरे अंदर हमेशा यह इच्छा उमड़ती रहती थी कि मैं श्रव्य ध्वनियाँ मुँह सेनिकाल सकूँ। मैँ एक हाथ अपने गले पर रखकर शोर किया करती थ्ज्ञी और दूसे हाथ से अपने होंठों का चलना महसूस करती थी। मुझे शोर करनेवाली हर चीज पसंद थी और बिल्ली का घुरघुराना तथा कुत्ते का भौंकना मुझे अच्छा लगता था। मुझे अपना एक हाथ गायक के गले पर रखना भी अच्छा लगता था। अपनी दृष्टि और श्रवण-शक्ति खोने से पहले मैं बात करना जल्दी सीखने लगी थी; लेकिन मेरी बीमारीक े बाद यह पता चला कि मेरा बोलना इसलिए बंद हो गया, क्योंकि मैं सुन नहीं सकती थी। मैं सारे-सारे दिन अपनी माँ की गोद में बैठी रहती थी और अपना हाथ माँ के चेहरे पर रखे रहती थी, क्योंकि उसके होंठों की क्रिया को महसूस करने में मुझे आनंद आता था और मैं अपने होंठ भी हिलाती थी; हालाँकि मैं भूल चुकी थी कि बात करना क्या होता है।

उनको पढ़ना हिन्दी मेधा के शिखर से गुजरना है। साहित्य-रचना के मर्म तक पहुँचने के लिए उनकी आलोचकीय जिज्ञासा रस, लय, शब्द-संयोजन आदि की पड़ताल करते हुए भाषा-विज्ञान, भाषा-इतिहास और दर्शनशास्त्र तक पहुँची। मार्क्सवादी विश्व-दृष्टि उनके चिन्तन और विवेचन की अविचल आधारभूमि रही, लेकिन उसे भी उन्होंने अपनी सीमा नहीं बनने दिया।
आलोचना-समीक्षा करते समय उन्होंने सिद्धान्तों या प्रतिमानों को विशेष महत्त्व नहीं दिया। उनके अनुसार, 'प्रतिमान आलोचना की अग्रभूमि में स्थित नहीं हैं। प्रत्येक रचना अपना प्रतिमान गढ़ती है; आलोचक उसका अन्वेषण करते हुए रचनाकार की विश्व-दृष्टि, उसकी परिस्थिति, परिवेश और यथार्थ-चित्रण का मूल्यांकन करता है।’
यह रामविलास शर्मा रचनावली का दूसरा भाग है जिसमें उनके भाषा तथा भाषाविज्ञान सम्बन्धी लेखन को प्रस्तुत किया गया है। भाषा को लेकर भी रामविलास जी का अध्ययन व्यापक और विचारोत्तेजक रहा है जिसमें उन्होंने भावी अध्ययन तथा विचार-विमर्श के लिए कई नए प्रस्थान बिन्दु प्रस्तुत किए।
रचनावली के इस बीसवें खंड में रामविलास शर्मा के बहुचर्चित अध्ययन ‘भाषा और समाज’ को प्रस्तुत किया गया है। समाज के विकास के सन्दर्भ में भाषा का अध्ययन करते हुए उन्होंने इसमें भाषाविज्ञान और समाजविज्ञान की अनेक मान्यताओं का तर्क सहित खंडन-मंडन किया है। भाषा-सम्बन्धी अनेक व्यावहारिक समस्याएँ भी यहाँ उनके विवेचन का विषय बनी हैं।
रचनावली के इस इक्कीसवें खंड में रामविलास जी की बहुचर्चित कृति ‘भारत की भाषा-समस्या’ को प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है। इस पुस्तक में भाषा-समस्या के विभिन्न पक्षों पर विस्तार से विचार करते हुए वे अन्य बिन्दुओं के साथ यह भी स्पष्ट करते हैं कि हिन्दी और उर्दू के मध्य एक बुनियादी एकता है और सभी जनपदीय बोलियाँ परस्पर सम्बद्ध हैं।
रचनावली के इस बाईसवें खंड में उनकी दो महत्त्वपूर्ण पुस्तकें ‘आर्य और द्रविड़ भाषा-परिवारों का सम्बन्ध’ तथा तीन जिल्दों में प्रकाशित ‘भारत के भाषा परिवार और हिन्दी’ का पहला खंड शामिल किया गया है। भाषा-सम्बन्धी उनके सुदीर्घ चिन्तन में इन पुस्तकों की विशेष महत्ता रही है।
रचनावली के इस तेईसवें खंड में ‘भारत के प्राचीन भाषा-परिवार और हिन्दी’ का दूसरा खंड प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है। इस पुस्तक में उन्होंने इण्डो-यूरोपियन भाषा-परिवार की भारतीय पृष्ठभूमि का विस्तृत विश्लेषण किया है। वे बताते हैं कि हिन्दी का विकास एक ‘वृहत्तर विकास-प्रक्रिया का अंग है’ और इसे समझने के लिए केवल संस्कृत की पृष्ठभूमि पर्याप्त नहीं है।
रचनावली के इस चौबीसवें खंड में ‘भारत के प्राचीन भाषा-परिवार और हिन्दी’ शीर्षक उनके विशद अध्ययन का तीसरा खंड प्रस्तुत है। इस पुस्तक में नाग, द्रविड़ और कोल भाषा-परिवारों व हिन्दी प्रदेश की विशेषताओं का विवेचन किया गया है। भारतीय व्याकरण परम्परा तथा भाषाविज्ञान और भौतिकवाद विषयक चिन्तन भी इस खंड का हिस्सा है।
