केपलर का जन्म सन् 1571 में दक्षिणी जर्मनी के एक शहर वाइल में हुआ था। अभी वह चार साल के ही थे कि चेचक के शिकार हो गए। इससे उनकी आँखें बहुत कमजोर हो गईं और हाथों से लगभग अपंग ही हो गए। इन सब बाधाओं के बावजूद केपलर बचपन से ही एक प्रतिभाशाली विद्यार्थी थे। चर्चों की व्यवस्थापक संस्था ने उनका भविष्य निर्धारित कर दिया और वे धर्म विज्ञान का अध्ययन करने के लिए ईसाइयों के ‘गुरुकुल’ में दाखिल हो गए।
उन्होंने ट्यूविंजेन विश्वविद्यालय की छात्रवृत्ति उपार्जित की। यहाँ वे कोपरनिकस के विचारों के संपर्क में आए, जैसे किस प्रकार ग्रह-नक्षत्र सूर्य के चारों ओर परिक्रमा करते हैं। गणित पर आधारित नक्षत्रों की गतिविधि का ‘सूक्ष्म’ अध्ययन जहाँ उनका विषय था, वहाँ उन्होंने मूर्त आकृतियों, धन वर्ग, चतुष्फलक, अष्टफलक, द्वादशफलक तथा विशंतिफलक की पूर्णता के संबंध में भी एक अंतर्सूत्र सा, एक ‘स्थूल’ नियम सा प्रस्तुत करने की कोशिश की।
केपलर ने विज्ञान के अन्य क्षेत्रों में भी अन्वेषण किए। मानव दृष्टि तथा दृष्टि विज्ञान के संबंध में जो स्थापनाएँ उन्होंने विकसित कीं, उनका प्रकाश के ‘अपसरण’ के क्षेत्र में बहुत महत्त्व है। इस पुस्तक में जोहैनीज केपलर की जीवनकथा का रोचक एवं प्रेरक वर्णन है।

- Description: भारतीय जेलों में पाँच साल बीसवीं सदी के सातवें दशक का ऐसा कैमरा है, जिसकी तस्वीरें विभिन्न कोणों से भारत का साक्षात्कार कराती हैं। बंगाल के नक्सलबाड़ी गाँव से नक्सलवादी आन्दोलन की शुरुआत सन् 1967 में हुई थी, जहाँ किसानों ने बड़े ज़मींदारों के विरुद्ध सशस्त्र विद्रोह किया था। धीरे-धीरे यह आन्दोलन बंगाल से देश के अन्य प्रान्तों में फैल गया। विद्रोहियों का उद्देश्य जनता की सरकार क़ायम करना था। विद्रोह को दबाने के लिए दमनात्मक कार्रवाई की गई, जिसके शिकार सिर्फ़ कथित नक्सली ही नहीं हुए बल्कि आम भारतीय किसान और मज़दूर भी हुए। उसी दौरान इस पुस्तक की लेखक मेरी टाइलर को भी विदेशी जासूस समझकर अन्य विद्रोहियों के समान गिरफ़्तार कर जेल भेज दिया गया था। जेल में रहते हुए उन्होंने विद्रोहियों के जीवन-संघर्ष को काफ़ी निकट से जाना। उन्होंने महसूस किया कि नक्सलियों की जनता के प्रति निष्ठा तथा आत्मबलिदान ही नक्सलवादी आन्दोलन को मिले अपार जनसमर्थन के कारण बने। नक्सलियों की ईमानदार जनपक्षधरता ने मेरी टाइलर को अभिभूत किया। उनके ब्रिटेन से आकर भारत में रहने के पीछे मूल प्रेरणा कृषि-क्रान्ति के लिए हुआ यही सशस्त्र विद्रोह था। यह पुस्तक उनके अनुभवों, संस्मरणों तथा घटनाओं का लेखा-जोखा है, जिसको उन्होंने प्रत्यक्षतः देखा। यहाँ जेल में रहने के दौरान उन्हें भी तरह-तरह की यातनाओं से दो-चार होना पड़ा। नक्सलवादी आन्दोलन के बहाने पुस्तक ऐसे कई दरीचे खोलती है, जहाँ से तत्कालीन भारत की उन सामाजिक, आर्थिक तथा राजनीतिक स्थितियों से उपजे प्रश्नों को साफ़-साफ़ देखा जा सकता है जिनमें से ज़्यादातर अब तक अनुत्तरित हैं। स्वातंत्र्योत्तर भारत को जानने-समझने के लिए एक ज़रूरी पुस्तक!
