"दीनदयाल उपाध्याय प्रणीत एकात्म मानववाद के संदर्भ में एक चर्चा होती रहती है कि यह ‘वाद’ है या ‘दर्शन’? ‘वाद’ पाश्चात्य परंपरा का वाहक है, जबकि ‘दर्शन’ भारतीय परंपरा का। ‘एकात्म मानव’ का विचार तत्त्वतः भारतीय विचार है, अतः इसे ‘दर्शन’ कहना चाहिए, कुछ लोगों का यह आग्रह रहता है, जो गलत नहीं है। मा. नानाजी देशमुख ‘दीनदयाल शोध संस्थान’ में ‘दर्शन’ शब्द का ही प्रयोग करते थे।
यह बात ठीक होते हुए भी यह तथ्य है कि दीनदयाल उपाध्याय ने अपने बौद्धिक वर्गों में तथा ‘सिद्धांत एवं नीति’ प्रलेख में इसे ‘एकात्म मानववाद’ कहा है। मुंबई में जो उनके चार भाषण हुए, उनमें भी ‘एकात्म मानववाद’ शब्दपद का ही उपयोग है। पाश्चात्य चिंतन की पृष्ठभूमि में दीनदयालजी ने इस विचार का विवेचन किया है। व्यक्तिवाद व समाजवाद को उन्होंने पृष्ठभूमि में वर्णित किया है, अतः ‘एकात्म मानववाद’ भी एकदम संगत शब्द प्रयोग है। यथा रुचि ‘वाद या दर्शन’ दोनों का ही प्रयोग किया जा सकता है, यह कोई विवाद का मुद्दा नहीं है।
