(सर) जगदीश च्रंद बसु भारत के प्रसिद्ध वैज्ञानिक थे जिन्हें भौतिकी, जीवविज्ञान, वनस्पतिविज्ञान तथा पुरातत्त्व का गहरा ज्ञान था। ये पहले वैज्ञानिक थे जिन्होंने रेडियो और सूक्ष्म तरंगों की प्रकशिकी पर कार्य किया। साथ ही ये भारत के पहले वैज्ञानिक शोधकर्ता थे। इन्हें रेडियो विज्ञान का पिता माना जाता है। ये विज्ञानकथाएँ भी लिखते थे और इन्हें बंगाली विज्ञानकथा-साहित्य का पिता भी माना जाता है। इन्होंने बेतार के संकेत भेजने में असाधारण प्रगति की और सबसे पहले रेडियो संदेशों को पकड़ने के लिए अर्धचालकों का प्रयोग करना शुरू किया। लेकिन अपनी खोजों से व्यावसायिक लाभ उठाने की जगह इन्होंने इन्हें सार्वजनिक रुप से प्रकाशित कर दिया ताकि अन्य शोधकर्त्ता इनपर आगे काम कर सकें। इसके बाद इन्होंने वनस्पति जीवविद्या में अनेक खोजें की। इन्होंने एक यंत्र क्रेस्कोग्राफ का अविष्कार किया और इससे विभिन्न उत्तेजकों के प्रति पौधों की प्रतिक्रिया का अध्ययन किया। इस तरह से इन्होंने सिद्ध किया कि वनस्पतियों और पशुओं के ऊतकों में काफी समानता है। ये पेटेंट प्रक्रिया के बहुत विरुद्ध थे और मित्रों के कहने पर इन्होंने एक पेटेंट के लिए आवेदन किया। "

Rajputs and Sikhs repaid their debt to Marathas by keeping the Mughals, post Aurangzeb, completely embroiled in Punjab and Rajputana, and indirectly paving the way for an almost unchallenged rise of the Marathas. The prolonged resistance witnessed the supreme sacrifices of numerous unsung heroes of medieval history. Through unmatched grit and determination, they succeeded in bringing down the mighty Empire to its knees, eventually leading to its demise.

- Description: ‘अँधेरे में’ उत्तरशती की सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण और शायद सबसे विवादास्पद कविता है। विवाद भिन्न रुचि और विचारधारा वालों के बीच ही नहीं, समानधर्मा आलोचकों के बीच भी है। यह तथ्य कविता की सम्भावनाशीलता का प्रमाण है। यह भी सही है कि मुक्तिबोध के जीवन-काल में इस कविता को ख़ुद उनसे सुना तो कइयों ने होगा, लेकिन इसे सराहा उनकी मृत्यु के बाद ही गया। इस विलम्ब का कारण उपेक्षा या उदासीनता नहीं, बल्कि ऐतिहासिकता है। अपने समय का अतिक्रमण हर कालजयी रचना में होता है। लेकिन आनेवाले समय के इस कदर साथ चलनेवाली रचनाओं की संख्या बहुत नहीं होती। इस दृष्टि से देखने पर यह बात हैरत में डालनेवाली है कि अपने सारे जटिल अर्थ-विन्यास और अपारदर्शी शिल्प के बावजूद इस कविता के पाठकों की संख्या उत्तरोत्तर बढ़ती गई है। कविता के पाठक-आलोचकों ने तरह-तरह से इस बात को दोहराया है कि मध्यवर्ग के सुविधाजीवी, समझौतावादी और आदर्शजीवी मन का संघर्ष ही ‘अँधेरे में’ की काव्य-वस्तु है। इस पुस्तक में ख्यात हिन्दी आलोचक निर्मला जैन ने ‘अँधेरे में’ पर आधारित आलोचनात्मक आलेखों को संकलित किया है। ये आलेख इस कालजयी कविता की विभिन्न पक्षों से व्याख्या करते हैं।
