"सन् 1890-92 के कालखंड में छोटा नागपुर के अधिकतर वनवासी चर्च के पादरियों के बहकावे में आकर ईसाई बन गए थे। बिरसा मुंडा का परिवार भी इनमें शामिल था, परंतु शीघ्र ही पादरियों की असलियत भाँपकर बिरसा न केवल ईसाई मत त्यागकर हिंदू धर्म में लौट आए, वरन् उन्होंने उस क्षेत्र के अन्य वनवासियों की हिंदू धर्म में वापसी कराई। यही बिरसा मुंडा आगे चलकर एक महान् क्रांतिकारी तथा ‘धरती-आबा’ (जगत्-पिता) के नाम से विख्यात हुए। बिरसा मुंडा ने अपने समाज के लोगों को पवित्र जीवन की शिक्षा दी। देश को स्वतंत्र कराने के प्रयास में अत्याचारी अंग्रेजों के विरुद्ध अपने समाज के लोगों में क्रांति-ज्वाला धधकाई। आखिर घबराकर अंग्रेज सरकार ने छल-कपट का सहारा लिया। उसने बिरसा को पकड़वाने पर 500 रुपए के इनाम की घोषणा की। अनेक मुंडा सरदारों पर भी इनाम घोषित कर दिए गए। आखिरकार विश्वासघातियों की मुखबिरी से रात में सोते समय बिरसा को बंदी बना लिया गया। जीवित रहते हुए बिरसा मुंडा ने अपने शौर्यपूर्ण कार्यों से अंग्रेज सरकार की नींद उड़ा दी थी, मृत्यु के बाद भी वह उसके लिए भय का कारण बने रहे। इसलिए सुवर्ण रेखा नदी के घाट पर बिरसा का शव जेल-कर्मचारियों द्वारा कंडों की आग में गुपचुप तरीके से जला दिया गया। इसकी किसी को भनक तक नहीं लगी। प्रस्तुत है एक आदिवासी क्रांतिकारी, देशप्रेमी, समाज-उद्धारक बिरसा मुंडा की पठनीय एवं प्रेरणादायी जीवनी।
