<p>राष्ट्रवाद जिस रूप में आज हमारे सामने है, उसे वजूद में आए सौ साल से ज़्यादा हो गए हैं। दुनिया के इतिहास में इसकी भूमिका को लेकर अनेक इतिहासकारों, राजनीतिशास्त्रियों और समाजवैज्ञानिकों ने अध्ययन किया है। देखा गया है कि राजनीति के लिए यह सबसे निर्णायक कारकों में से एक रहा है। इसकी आलोचना भी ख़ूब हुई है। यह एक दोधारी तलवार है जो लोगों को जोड़ भी सकती है और राजनीति, संस्कृति, भाषा और धर्म के आधार पर बाँट भी सकती है।</p>

प्रथम दृष्ट्या तथ्यों पर आधारित इस आत्मकथा में हमें भारतीय स्वतंत्रता आन्दोलन की कुछ झलकियों के अलावा पाकिस्तान आन्दोलन, भाषा आन्दोलन, बांग्लादेश की स्वाधीनता के आन्दोलन और इसके दौरान पाकिस्तानी शासन द्वारा किए गए षड्यंत्रों और दमन से सम्बन्धित अनेक दुर्लभ ऐतिहासिक तथ्यों और कहानियों की जानकारी मिलेगी।
कई वर्षों तक अनुपलब्ध रही इस आत्मकथा को सामने लाने का श्रेय उनकी पुत्री शेख हसीना और उनके अन्य परिजनों को जाता है जिन्होंने अत्यन्त परिश्रम के साथ जर्जर, खस्ताहाल काग़ज़ों में से इस दस्तावेज़ को सम्भव किया।
