इस पुस्तक के लेखक महेन्द्र मिश्र की पहली विशेषता तो यही है कि वे पेशेवर अर्थ में फ़िल्म-समीक्षक नहीं हैं। वस्तुतः वे प्रकृति से कवि-विचारक हैं, कर्म से एक अनुभव-सिद्ध पूर्व प्रशासक और रुचि से एक गहरे फ़िल्म-प्रेमी। इसीलिए पूरी पुस्तक की भाषा और व्याख्या-विश्लेषण में एक सहज अनौपचारिकता की गंध मिलेगी, जो इसे इस प्रकार के समस्त लेखन से भिन्न और विशिष्ट बनाती है। असल में यह पुस्तक सत्यजित राय के वृहत् कला-संसार की ओर खुलनेवाली एक खिड़की है—सम्भवतः हिन्दी की पहली ऐसी खिड़की, जिससे आती हुई रोशनी पर भरोसा किया जा सकता है। यह रोशनी पाठकों तक पहुँचेगी, ऐसा मेरा विश्वास है।
