- Description: भारतीय साहित्य और संस्कृति पर मैक्स मूलर के अगाध ज्ञान को देखते हुए इंग्लैंड की सरकार ने उन्हें 1882 में आई.सी.एस. पास हुए अँग्रेज़ युवकों के प्रशिक्षण के दौरान भारतीय धर्म, साहित्य और संस्कृति पर व्याख्यान देने के लिए आमंत्रित किया, ताकि ये भावी प्रशासक भारत की आत्मा को उचित ढंग से समझ सकें। इस अवसर पर प्रो. मैक्स मूलर ने सात व्याख्यान दिए जिन्हें बाद में पुस्तक के रूप में 1882 में ही प्रकाशित कर दिया गया। यह पुस्तक उसी का अनुवाद है। इन व्याख्यानों में उन्होंने बताया कि भारतीय समाज को पश्चिम से कमतर समझना भूल है। उन्होंने वेदों और यहाँ के पुराख्यानों की व्याख्या करते हुए बताया कि ये सब हिन्दुओं की जीवन-प्रणाली के प्राण हैं। आज भी उनके ये व्याख्यान भारतीय अस्मिता और प्रज्ञा को समझने के लिए महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं। इन व्याख्यानों में वे क्रमश: भारत की भौगोलिक सम्पन्नता, सांस्कृतिक विविधता, चारित्रिक जटिलता और धार्मिकता पर अपने गहन अध्ययन की रोशनी में प्रकाश डालते हैं। वे बताते हैं कि नृतत्त्वशास्त्रियों, भाषाशास्त्रियों, इतिहासकारों, समाजशास्त्रियों और धार्मिक चिन्तकों के लिए भारत में कितना कुछ है, जिस पर वे काम कर सकते हैं। एक पूरा व्याख्यान इस शृंखला में उन्होंने सिर्फ़ इस धारणा को निरस्त करने के लिए दिया, जिसके अनुसार भारत के हिन्दू लोगों में सत्य के प्रति सम्मान नहीं है। इस पूर्वाग्रह के विरुद्ध उन्होंने अनेक विद्वानों के मन्तव्य देते हुए और कई ग्रन्थों के उदाहरण देते हुए सिद्ध किया कि ऐसा नहीं है। मैक्स मूलर को लेकर एक नकारात्मक विचार उस धारा के साथ भी चलता है, जिसमें मैकाले के अंग्रेज़ी को लेकर किए गए प्रयासों को एक साज़िश करार दिया जाता है, तो भी यह जानने के लिए कि मैक्स मूलर स्वयं भारत और भारतीय संस्कृति के बारे में क्या सोचते थे, यह पुस्तक एक अनिवार्य पाठ है।
