सनातम धर्म का आधार वेद, उपनिषद्, पुराण, शास्त्र हैं। 'रामचरितमानस' श्रीराम का अयन है। इसमें चार विषय हैं—कर्म क्या है ? ज्ञान क्या है ? भक्ति क्या है ? शरणागति क्या है ? सुंदरकाण्ड पंचम सोपान है, इसमें इन चारों प्रश्नों का उत्तर सुंदर भावों में प्रकट होता है।
हनुमानजी ने रावण को चार चीजों का उपदेश दिया— भक्ति, वैराग्य, विवेक और नीति। भगवान् की प्रेमपूर्वक सेवा का नाम भक्ति है जो हनुमानजी ने सुंदर भावरूप में प्रकट किया है। भक्तिरूपी वृक्ष भावरूपी बीज से ही पैदा होता है। भगवत् चरणों का आश्रय मानव जीवन को कुशल बना देता है; भक्त भगवान् में जीता है, यही शरणागति है।
'सुंदरकाण्ड' वर्तमान युग में एक औषधि है, जो मानव जीवन के तापों को शांत करता है, शक्ति प्रदान करता है और सबको विषम परिस्थितियों में भी जीना सिखाता है। जो इसका पाठ नित्य करते हैं, वे अनुभव करते हैं कि श्रीहनुमानजी के चरित्र में कितना विश्वास, प्रताप, तेज और भक्ति है। जब पाठ में इतना बल है तो उसके एक-एक शब्द के अर्थ को जब जानेंगे, पहचानेंगे तो कितना आनंद होगा, इसकी गहराई को अनुभव करने के लिए यह ग्रंथ पाठकों के लिए अत्यंत कल्याणकारी सिद्ध होगा।

दुिनया की अनेक भाषाओं में अनूिदत इस किताब ने आलोचना भी कम नहीं झेली, लेिकन आज भी यह उतनी ही प्रासंगिक है जितनी बीसवीं सदी के आख़िरी दशकों में थी। तमाम क्षेत्रों में अपनी दावेदारी सिद्ध करने के बावजूद, अभी भी यह नहीं कहा जा सकता कि स्त्री अपनी देह की मालिक ख़ुद है।
भारत के सन्दर्भ में इस पुस्तक के तर्क और भी ज़्यादा सटीक कहे जा सकते हैं।
