1951 की एक सुबह उर्दू के मशहूर शायर फ़ैज़ अहमद फ़ैज़ के घर पर छापा पड़ा और उन्हें रावलपिंडी साज़िश केस में उनके घर से गिरफ़्तार किया गया। घर से ले जाते वक़्त उन्हें कपड़े तक बदलने की मोहलत नहीं दी गई। फ़ैज़ के परिवार पर ये एक मुसीबत के दौर का आग़ाज़ था। उनकी पत्नी एलिस के अलावा उनकी दो लड़कियाँ मुनीज़ा और सलीमा भी अब लाहौर में अकेली रह गई थीं। मगर इस मुसीबत का सामना फ़ैज़ और एलिस ने जिस बहादुरी और हिम्मत से किया और अपने आपसी प्रेम को इस हिज्र और फ़ासले में और गहरा करते हुए, अपनी मोहब्बत के धारे को दुखी इनसानों के दर्दो ग़म को समझने की तरफ़ जिस तरह मोड़ा, ये बात इन ख़तों को पढ़ने से पता चलती है। इन ख़तों में जहाँ एक तरफ़ फ़ैज़ की बे-परवा, आज़ाद और शायराना फ़ितरत का पता मिलता है, वहीं एलिस के जज़्बे, याद के दुःख और राज्य से सीधे टकरा जाने का जज़्बा भी साफ़ दिखाई देता है।
हम इन ख़तों को पढ़ कर ही जान पाते हैं कि अगर ये हादसा फ़ैज़ की ज़िन्दगी में न गुज़रा होता तो हम फ़ैज़ की उस बाग़ी शायरी से शायद महरूम रहते जिसने उनसे इनसान की उस हिम्मत पर यादगार नज़्में और ग़ज़लें लिखवाईं, जिसे कोई भी रियासत, कैसी भी सियासत क़ैद में डाल कर फ़ना नहीं कर सकती। उसकी आवाज़ को रोकना ना-मुमकिन है, जैसा कि फ़ैज़ ने लिखा था—
मता-ए-लौह-ओ-क़लम छिन गई तो क्या ग़म है
कि ख़ून-ए-दिल में डुबो ली हैं उंगलियाँ मैंने
ज़बाँ पे मुहर लगी है तो क्या कि रख दी है
हर एक हल्क़ा-ए-ज़ंजीर में ज़बाँ मैंने

पिछले दो-तीन दशकों में हिन्दी नवजागरण और हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन पर केन्द्रित अध्ययनों ने हिन्दी लोकवृत्त की हमारी समझ को निश्चित ही समृद्ध किया है। लेकिन जहाँ तक हिन्दी के भाषाई संगठनों का सवाल है तो ये अध्ययन हिन्दीभाषी क्षेत्र के इन भाषाई संगठनों के समूचे वजूद को प्रायः भाषायी राजनीति के चश्मे से ही देखते हैं। कहना न होगा कि ऐसा कोई भी मूल्यांकन उन भाषायी संगठनों की बहुआयामी गतिविधियों के आकलन का एक संकीर्ण और सीमित नजरिया है। ऐसे मूल्यांकनों में इन भाषायी संगठनों की वह भूमिका परिदृश्य से ओझल हो जाती है, जो वे हिन्दी लोकवृत्त में ज्ञानोत्पादन की प्रक्रिया में निभा रहे थे। इसलिए मौजूदा पुस्तक में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन का इतिहास लिखते हुए उसे सिर्फ भाषा की राजनीति या हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की भूमिका तक ही सीमित नहीं किया गया है, बल्कि हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की बहुआयामी गतिविधियों और हिन्दी लोकवृत्त में ज्ञान के सृजन में सम्मेलन के योगदान को समग्रता से विश्लेषित करने का प्रयास भी इसमें हुआ है।

साहित्य में मंज़रनामा एक मुकम्मिल फ़ॉर्म है। यह एक ऐसी विधा है जिसे पाठक बिना किसी रुकावट के रचना का मूल आस्वाद लेते हुए पढ़ सकें। लेकिन मंज़रनामा का अन्दाज़े-बयान अमूमन मूल रचना से अलग हो जाता है या यूँ कहें कि वह मूल रचना का इन्टरप्रेटेशन हो जाता है।
मंज़रनामा पेश करने का एक उद्देश्य तो यह है कि पाठक इस फ़ॉर्म से रू-ब-रू हो सकें और दूसरा यह कि टी.वी. और सिनेमा में दिलचस्पी रखनेवाले लोग यह देख-जान सकें कि किसी कृति को किस तरह मंज़रनामे की शक्ल दी जाती है। टी.वी. की आमद से मंज़रनामों की ज़रूरत में बहुत इज़ाफ़ा हो गया है।
कथाकार, शायर, गीतकार, पटकथाकार गुलज़ार ने लीक से हटकर शरत्चन्द्र की-सी संवेदनात्मक मार्मिकता, सहानुभूति और करुणा से ओत-प्रोत कई उम्दा फ़िल्मों का निर्देशन किया जिनमें ‘मेरे अपने’, ‘अचानक’, ‘परिचय’, ‘आँधी’, ‘मौसम’, ‘ख़ुशबू’, ‘मीरा’, ‘किनारा’, ‘नमकीन’, ‘लेकिन’, ‘लिबास’, और ‘माचिस’ जैसी फ़िल्में शामिल हैं।
‘लिबास’ एक ऐसी फ़िल्म का मंज़रनामा है जिस पर 1986 में फ़िल्म बन गई मगर आज तक रिलीज़ नहीं हुई। हालाँकि अफ़साने की सूरत में यह ‘चाबी’ और ‘सीमा’ नाम से प्रकाशित हो चुका है।
‘लिबास’ सीमा और सुधीर नाम के थिएटर की दुनिया के एक युगल के बिखरे रिश्तों की कहानी है जिसके केन्द्र में सीमा का चंचल व्यक्तित्व है। वह बहुत दिनों तक एक ही स्थिति में नहीं रह सकती। यहाँ तक कि बोरियत दूर करने के लिए वह अपने पति को छोड़कर दूसरी शादी कर लेती है लेकिन पुनः उसे बोरियत महसूस होने लगती है। मगर शादी लिबास तो नहीं होती कि फट जाए, मैला हो जाए तो बदल लिया जाए।
शब्दों के धनी और संवेदनशील शायर गुलज़ार ने इस मंज़रनामे में थिएटर की दुनिया की भी झलक दिखाई है। निश्चय ही पाठकों को यह कृति एक औपन्यासिक रचना का आस्वाद प्रदान करेगी।
