This inhuman system of exploitation of workers finally ended and the centenary of its abolition was commemorated in many parts of the world including India during 2017-18. Antar Rashtrya Sahyog Parishad (ARSP) had organised year-long activities to mark this important landmark in the life of the Indian diaspora, culminating with an international conference on the topic, ‘Contribution of Diaspora in Nation Building’ in Mauritius in July 2018. - Description: प्रेमचन्द का इतना अधिक कथा तथा कथेतर लुप्त साहित्य प्रकाश में आने के बाद भी ऐसा लगता है कि उनकी कुछ और उर्दू-हिन्दी कहानियाँ तथा लेख अब भी यत्र-तत्र पुरानी पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में दबे पड़े हैं और उन्हें खोजकर प्रकाश में लाना अभी शेष है। दोनों भाषाओं में स्वतंत्र लेखन करनेवाले प्रेमचन्द जैसे द्विभाषी लेखक की तत्कालीन पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में जहाँ-तहाँ दबी पड़ी पुरानी सामग्री की खोज का कार्य काफ़ी दुष्कर है। इसका मुख्य कारण है—उस समय की पत्र-पत्रिकाओं का सुगमता से उपलब्ध न होना और दोनों भाषाओं का अच्छा ज्ञान रखनेवाले खोजी प्रकृति के लगनशील शोधकर्मियों का अभाव। एक अन्य कारण यह भी है कि कभी-कभी प्रेमचन्द ने कुछ रचनाएँ धनपतराय, नवाबराय या प्रेमचन्द के अतिरिक्त कतिपय अन्य काल्पनिक नामों से भी लिखी हैं जिसकी जानकारी कम ही लोगों को है। ऐसे नामों से लिखी कुछ रचनाएँ प्रकाश में आ भी चुकी हैं। यद्यपि प्रचलित नामों के अतिरिक्त अन्य नामों से लिखी रचनाओं की संख्या बहुत अधिक तो नहीं प्रतीत होती, परन्तु अब भी कुछ रचनाएँ यदि कहीं दबी पड़ी हैं तो उन्हें भी खोजकर प्रकाश में लाना महत्त्वपूर्ण उपलब्धि मानी जाएगी। सौभाग्य से डॉ. प्रदीप जैन के रूप में एक ऐसे निष्ठावान और उत्साही व्यक्ति ने इस शोध-कार्य को अपने हाथों में लिया है जो हिन्दी साहित्य के विद्वान् होने के साथ ही उर्दू भाषा के भी अच्छे ज्ञाता हैं। विगत कुछ वर्षों से उनके द्वारा किए जा रहे महत्त्वपूर्ण शोध-कार्य का ही परिणाम है प्रस्तुत शोध-ग्रन्थ, जिसके माध्यम से प्रेमचन्द की छह लुप्त कहानियों और सात लुप्त लेखों के साथ दिल्ली प्रान्तीय हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन में दिया गया भाषण और अहमद अली, सज्जाद जहीर एवं पं. देवीदत्त शुक्ल के नाम लिखे गए अनेक दुर्लभ पत्र तथा सरस्वती प्रेस के विवाद के सम्बन्ध में प्रेमचन्द-महताबराय के मध्य हुआ दुर्लभ पत्राचार भी प्रकाश में आ सका है। इस शोध-ग्रन्थ का विद्वत्तापूर्ण विस्तृत प्राक्कथन लिखकर डॉ. प्रदीप जैन ने उसका महत्त्व और भी बढ़ा दिया है। —कृष्ण कुमार राय
