परसाई की कथा-दृष्टि समकालीन भारतीय समाज और मनुष्य की आचरणगत जिन विसंगतियों और अन्तर्विरोधों तक पहुँचती है, साहित्यिक इतिहास में उसकी एक सकारात्मक भूमिका है, क्योंकि रोगोपचार से पहले रोग-निदान आवश्यक है और अपनी कमजोरियों से उबरने के लिए उनकी बारीक पहचान । परसाई की कलम इसी निदान और पहचान का सशक्त माध्यम है।
परसाई के कथा-साहित्य में रूपायित स्थितियाँ, घटनाएँ और व्यक्ति-चरित्र अपने समाज की व्यापक और एकनिष्ठ पड़ताल का नतीजा हैं । स्वातंत्र्योत्तर भारत के सामाजिक और राजनीतिक यथार्थ के जिन विभिन्न स्तरों से हम यहाँ गुजरते हैं, वह हमारे लिए एक नया अविस्मरणीय अनुभव बन जाता है । इससे हमें अपने आसपास को देखने और समझनेवाली एक नई विचार-दृष्टि तो मिलती ही है, हमारा नैतिक बोध भी जाग्रत् होता है; साथ ही प्रतिवाद और प्रतिरोध तक ले जानेवाली बेचैनी भी पैदा होती है। यह इसलिए कि परसाई के कथा-साहित्य में वैयक्तिक और सामाजिक अनुभव का द्वैत नहीं है। हमारे आसपास रहनेवाले विविध और बहुरंगी मानव-चरित्रों को केन्द्र में रखकर भी ये कहानियाँ वस्तुत: भारतीय समाज के ही प्रातिनिधिक चरित्र का उद्घाटन करती हैं । रचना-शिल्प के नाते इन कहानियों की भाषा का ठेठ देसी मिजाज और तेवर तथा उनमें निहित व्यंग्य हमें गहरे तक प्रभावित करता है। यही कारण है कि ये व्यंग्य कथाएँ हमारी चेतना और स्मृति का अभिन्न हिस्सा बन जाती हैं ।

- Description: डी.एन.ए. मूलभूत आनुवंशिक पदार्थ है और बहुत थोड़े से लोगों को साठ साल पहले यह भान हुआ कि डी.एन.ए. ही जीवन की कुंजी है। जेम्स डी. वॉट्सन उन्हीं में से एक थे जिन्होंने अपने सहयोगी फ्रांसिस क्रिक के साथ जीवन के इस अनूठे रहस्य की संरचना को खोजा और इसके साथ ही बीसवीं सदी के विज्ञान को नए पंख लगा दिए। इस खोज को बीसवीं सदी की दो सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण वैज्ञानिक घटनाओं में से एक माना जाता है। इस खोज ने डी.एन.ए. पर शोध का जो तूफ़ान चलाया था, वह आज तक थमा नहीं है। बात फिर चाहे जीन्स के पशुओं में परिस्थापन की हो या फिर फ़सलों की प्रकृति बदलने की, आप जीन्स या डी.एन.ए. से बच नहीं सकते। लेकिन यह शोध अपने साथ जो विवाद लाया था, वह भी आज तक ज़िन्दा है। क्रिक और वॉट्सन को कुछ रसायन विज्ञान का ज्ञान था, लेकिन दोनों में से किसी ने भी अपने शोध के परिणाम तक पहुँचने के लिए कभी प्रयोगशाला-परीक्षण नहीं किए थे। इसके विपरीत उन्होंने दूसरों द्वारा किए गए शोध को आधार बनाकर सिर्फ़ मॉडल बनाए—और बात बन गई। इस क्रम में केवेंडिश की प्रयोगशाला में रोज़ालिंड फ़्रैकलिन द्वारा लिए गए एक्स-रे चित्रों की विशेष भूमिका थी। वॉट्सन ने वह मशहूर चित्र 51 बिना रोज़ालिंड फ़्रैकलिन की जानकारी के रोज़ालिंड के सहयोगी मॉरिस विल्किन्स की मदद से देख लिया था। वह चित्र स्पष्ट रूप से डी.एन.ए. की प्रकृति को दिखा रहा था। इसके बाद वॉट्सन ज़ोर-शोर से मॉडल बनाने में लग गए। लेकिन अपने शोध में उन्होंने रोज़ालिंड के उस चित्र की भूमिका को कभी नहीं स्वीकारा, न ही अपनी खोज के श्रेय में रोज़ालिंड को कोई हिस्सा दिया। बल्कि इस पुस्तक में भी उन्होंने रोज़ी के रूप में उनका नकारात्मक चित्रण किया। बाद के वर्षों में रोज़ालिंड के सहयोगियों और तमाम स्त्रीवादियों द्वारा वॉट्सन के चित्रण की भर्त्सना भी की गई। यह पुस्तक बीसवीं सदी के विज्ञान साहित्य की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुस्तकों में गिनी जाती है। इसकी सीधी-सपाट भाषा प्रयोगशालाओं और वैज्ञानिकों के बीच के बौद्धिक सम्बन्धों की परम्परागत तसवीर को पूरी तरह खंडित करती है और दर्शाती है कि वैज्ञानिक भी मनुष्य हैं—ईर्ष्या, अभिलाषाओं और कुंठाओं से भरे मनुष्य। भारत में यह पुस्तक पहली बार 2003 में हिन्दी में प्रकाशित हुई और अपने विशेष महत्त्व के कारण आज भी पाठकों की प्रिय बनी हुई है।

- Description: यह किताब जीवन के दो पक्षों के बारे में है। एक स्त्री का और दूसरा उपनिवेश का। न इस उपनिवेश को समझना आसान है और न स्त्री को। अगर यह उपनिवेश वही होता जिससे बीसवीं सदी के मध्य में कई देशों और सभ्यताओं ने मुक्ति पाई थी तो शायद हम इसे राजनीतिक और आर्थिक परतंत्रता की संरचना करार दे सकते थे। अगर यह उपनिवेश वही होता जिससे लड़ने के लिए राष्ट्रवादी क्रान्तियाँ की गई थीं और आत्मनिर्भर अर्थव्यवस्था की अवधारणा पेश की गई थी तो शायद हम इसके ख़िलाफ़ उपनिवेशवाद विरोधी प्रत्यय की रचना आसानी से कर सकते थे। यह नवउपनिवेश के नाम से परिभाषित हो चुकी अन्तरराष्ट्रीय वित्तीय पूँजी की अप्रत्यक्ष हुकूमत भी नहीं है। यह तो अन्तराष्ट्रीय वित्तीय पूँजी, पितृसत्ता, इतरलिंगी यौन चुनाव और पुरुष-वर्चस्व की ज्ञानमीमांसा का उपनिवेश है जिसकी सीमाएँ मनोजगत से व्यवहार-जगत तक और राजसत्ता से परिवार तक फैली हैं। दूसरे पक्ष में होते हुए भी स्त्री पाले के दूसरी तरफ़ नहीं है। वह उपनिवेश के बीच में खड़ी है। उपनिवेश के ख़िलाफ़ संघर्ष उसका आत्म-संघर्ष भी है और यही स्थिति स्त्री को समझने की मुश्किलों के कारण बनी हुई है। स्त्री मुक्ति-कामना से छटपटा रही है लेकिन उपनिवेश के वर्चस्व से उसका मनोजगत आज भी आक्रान्त है। गुज़रे ज़मानों के उपनिवेशवाद विरोधी संघर्षों की तरह औरत की दुनिया के सिपहसालार उपनिवेश के साथ हाथ-भर का वह अन्तराल स्थापित नहीं कर पाए हैं जो इस लड़ाई में कामयाबी की पहली शर्त है। ‘उपनिवेश में स्त्री : मुक्ति-कामना की दस वार्ताएँ’ इस अन्तराल की स्थापना की दिशा में एक प्रयास है। ये वार्ताएँ कारख़ाने और दफ़्तर में काम करती हुई स्त्री, लिखती-रचती हुई स्त्री, प्रेम के द्वन्द्व में उलझी हुई स्त्री, मानवीय गरिमा की खोज में जुटी हुई स्त्री, बौद्धिक बनती हुई स्त्री और भाषा व विमर्श के संजाल में फँसी हुई स्त्री से सम्बन्धित हैं।
