"हमारे राष्ट्र निर्माताओं में जगद्गुरु श्री शंकराचार्य का स्थान बहुत ऊँचा है। कई विद्वानों ने तो उन्हें आधुनिक हिंदू धर्म का जनक ही कहा है। शंकराचार्य ने समस्त हिंदू-राष्ट्र को एक सूत्र में पिरोने एवं उसे संगठित करने का प्रयास किया। देश के चारों कोनों पर चार धामों के प्रति श्रद्धा केंद्रित करते हुए उन्होंने संपूर्ण भारतवर्ष की, मातृ-भू की मूर्ति जन-जन के हृदय पर अंकित कर दी। पंचायतन का पूजन प्रारंभ कर विभिन्न संप्रदायों को एक-दूसरे के आराध्य देवों के प्रति केवल सहिष्णुता का भाव ही नहीं तो सभी देवताओं के प्रति अपने इष्टदेव के माध्यम से वही श्रद्धा एवं आदर का भाव व्यक्त करने को प्रेरित किया, इसके अनुसार प्रत्येक पाँचों देवताओं—विष्णु, शुक्र, शक्ति, गणपति और सूर्य की पूजा करता है। अपनी श्रद्धा के अनुसार अपने इष्टदेव को बीच में तथा चारों ओर अन्य चार देवताओं को रखकर पूजन करने की उसे छूट है। चार धामों के समान ही उन्होंने समाज को धर्म मार्ग पर नियंत्रित एवं अनुशासित रखने के लिए चार शंकराचार्यों की अध्यक्षता में भारत के चारों कोनों में चार मठ स्थापित किए।
