उनका लेखकीय जीवन सत्तर के दशक में आरम्भ हुआ। अज्ञेय की पत्रिका ‘नया प्रतीक’ में कुछ कहानियाँ प्रकाशित हुईं, फिर अन्य पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में भी उनकी रचनाएँ छपीं। इला डालमिया की कहानियों में उनके अपने वर्ग की सोच को पकड़ा गया है। ‘नई कहानी’ आन्दोलन से अलग उन्होंने एक लयात्मक भाषा ईजाद की जिसमें उन्होंने भावप्रवण क्षणों का अंकन भी किया और अपने समय के सत्य को भी साधा।
बनता-बिगड़ता दाम्पत्य जीवन, स्त्री के दु:ख-सुख, रोज़ी-रोटी की समस्या आदि उनकी कथा-रचनाओं के केन्द्र में रहे हैं। ‘छत पर अर्पण’ उपन्यास में उन्होंने अपने ही कुछ अनुभवों को पिरोते हुए एक बड़े परिवार की लड़की की कहानी कही है, जहाँ घर की छत उसके तथा परिवार के बाक़ी लोगों के कई रहस्यों की साक्षी बनती है।
वे बहुत नहीं लिख पाईं लेकिन जितना भी लिखा, वह एक बड़ी प्रतिभा का संकेत ज़रूर देता है।
