हमारे दौर के असाधारण फ़िल्मकार और शायर गुलज़ार की फ़िल्म ‘मीरा’ की यह स्क्रिप्ट मीरा की जीवन-कथा का बयान-भर नहीं है। यह मीरा को देखने के लिए एक अलग नज़रिए का आविष्कार भी करती है।
जैसा कि स्वाभाविक ही था, माध्यम की ज़रूरतों के चलते, इस पाठ में मीरा हमें कहीं ज़्यादा मानवीय और अपने आसपास की देहधारी इकाई के रूप में दिखाई देती हैं; लगभग दैवी व्यक्तित्व नहीं जैसा कि इतिहास के नायकों के साथ अकसर होता है, और मीरा के साथ भी हुआ।
लेकिन मीरा के मानवीकरण में माध्यम की आवश्यकताओं के अलावा काफ़ी भूमिका ख़ुद गुलज़ार साहब की और एक रचनाकार के रूप में उनके रुझान की भी है। अपने गीतों में वे हवा, धूप और आहटों तक का मानवीकरण करते रहे हैं; फिर मीरा तो जीते-जागते इंसानों से भी कुछ ज़्यादा जीवित मानवी थीं।
मीरा और उनके युग का पुनराविष्कार करनेवाली फ़िल्म की स्क्रिप्ट के अलावा इस पुस्तक में गुलज़ार से उनके रचनाकर्म के बारे में यशवंत व्यास की एक लम्बी बातचीत भी है और साथ है ‘मीरा’ के निर्माण में आनेवाली मुश्किलों के बारे में गुलज़ार का एक संस्मरण, जो इस पुस्तक को और उपयोगी तथा संग्रहणीय बनाता है। सिनेमा के विद्यार्थियों और पटकथा लेखकों को भी यह पुस्तक बहुत कुछ सिखाती है।

- Description: 'आपका बंटी' मन्नू भंडारी की अत्यन्त चर्चित और हिन्दी उपन्यासों के इतिहास में मील का पत्थर मानी जानेवाली कृति है। टूटते परिवारों के बीच बच्चों को किस मानसिक यातना से गुज़रना पड़ता है, इस उपन्यास में उसे लगभग दस्तावेज़ी ढंग से अंकित किया गया है। जिस संवेदनशीलता और स्नेह से मन्नू जी इस चरित्र और उसके मानसिक जीवन को लिख पाईं, वह हिन्दी में दुबारा सम्भव नहीं हो सका। बंटी के माता-पिता सम्बन्ध-विच्छेद के बाद अलग-अलग रहते हैं और बाद मे अपना-अपना घर बसा लेते हैं। इस पूरी प्रक्रिया में बंटी को किसी भी घर में वह अपनापा महसूस नहीं होता जो उसे उसके माता-पिता एक साथ रहकर दे सकते थे। अन्त में बंटी को छात्रावास भेज दिया जाता है। इस पुस्तक में इस उपन्यास पर स्वयं मन्नू जी द्वारा लिखित फ़िल्म-पटकथा प्रकाशित की जा रही है। यहाँ यह जान लेना ज़रूरी है कि 'आपका बंटी’ को लेकर 1986 में 'समय की धारा' नाम से जो फ़िल्म बनी, यह उसकी पटकथा नहीं है। 'समय की धारा’ जिसमें शबाना आज़मी, शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा और विनोद मेहरा ने अभिनय किया, उस पर अपने उपन्यास को ग़लत ढंग से प्रस्तुत करने के लिए मन्नू जी ने अदालत में मामला दायर किया था। इसमें अन्त में बंटी की मृत्यु दिखाई गई थी। मुक़दमे का फ़ैसला मन्नू जी के पक्ष में रहा था। इस पुस्तक में प्रस्तुत पटकथा स्वयं मन्नू जी ने लिखी थी जिस पर फ़िल्म नहीं बन पाई, इसलिए पाठक इस प्रस्तुति को इस पुस्तक में ही पढ़ सकते हैं| अपने उपन्यास को दृश्यों में बदलते समय इस पटकथा में मन्नू जी ने एक सिद्धहस्त पटकथा लेखक होने का परिचय दिया है।

- Description: मिर्ज़ा असद-उल्लाह ख़ाँ ग़ालिब का नाम भारत ही नहीं, बल्कि विश्व के महान कवियों में शामिल है! मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब ने 1857 के आन्दोलन के सम्बन्ध में अपनी जो रूदाद लिखी है, उससे उनकी राजनीतिक विचारधारा और भारत में अंग्रेज़ी राज के सम्बन्ध में उनके दृष्टिकोण को समझने में काफ़ी मदद मिल सकती है! अपनी यह रूदाद उन्होंने लगभग डायरी की शक्ल में प्रस्तुत की है। और फ़ारसी भाषा में लिखी गई इस छोटी-सी पुस्तिका का नाम है—‘दस्तंबू’। फ़ारसी भाषा में 'दस्तंबू' शब्द का अर्थ है पुष्पगुच्छ, अर्थात् बुके (Bouquet)। अपनी इस छोटी-सी किताब 'दस्तंबू' में ग़ालिब ने 11 मई, 1857 से 31 जुलाई, 1857 तक की हलचलों का कवित्वमय वर्णन किया है। 'दस्तंबू' में ऐसे अनेक चित्र हैं जो अनायास ही पाठक के मर्म को छू लेते हैं। किताब के बीच-बीच में उन्होंने जो कविताई की है, उसके अतिरिक्त गद्य में भी कविता का पूरा स्वाद महसूस होता है। जगह-जगह बेबसी और अन्तर्द्वन्द्व की अनोखी अभिव्यक्तियाँ भरी हुई हैं। इस तरह 'दस्तंबू' में न केवल 1857 की हलचलों का वर्णन है, बल्कि ग़ालिब के निजी जीवन की वेदना भी भरी हुई है। ‘दस्तंबू’ के प्रकाशन को लेकर ग़ालिब ने अनेक लम्बे-लम्बे पत्र मुंशी हरगोपाल ‘तफ़्त:’ को लिखे हैं। अध्येताओं की सुविधा के लिए सारे पत्र पुस्तक के अन्त में दिए गए हैं। भारत की पहली जनक्रान्ति, उससे उत्पन्न परिस्थितियाँ और ग़ालिब की मनोवेदना को समझने के लिए ‘दस्तंबू’ एक ज़रूरी किताब है। इसे पढ़ने का मतलब है सन् 1857 को अपनी आँखों से देखना और अपने लोकप्रिय शाइर की संवेदनाओं से साक्षात्कार करना। —भूमिका से

- Description: यह किताब जीवन के दो पक्षों के बारे में है। एक स्त्री का और दूसरा उपनिवेश का। न इस उपनिवेश को समझना आसान है और न स्त्री को। अगर यह उपनिवेश वही होता जिससे बीसवीं सदी के मध्य में कई देशों और सभ्यताओं ने मुक्ति पाई थी तो शायद हम इसे राजनीतिक और आर्थिक परतंत्रता की संरचना करार दे सकते थे। अगर यह उपनिवेश वही होता जिससे लड़ने के लिए राष्ट्रवादी क्रान्तियाँ की गई थीं और आत्मनिर्भर अर्थव्यवस्था की अवधारणा पेश की गई थी तो शायद हम इसके ख़िलाफ़ उपनिवेशवाद विरोधी प्रत्यय की रचना आसानी से कर सकते थे। यह नवउपनिवेश के नाम से परिभाषित हो चुकी अन्तरराष्ट्रीय वित्तीय पूँजी की अप्रत्यक्ष हुकूमत भी नहीं है। यह तो अन्तराष्ट्रीय वित्तीय पूँजी, पितृसत्ता, इतरलिंगी यौन चुनाव और पुरुष-वर्चस्व की ज्ञानमीमांसा का उपनिवेश है जिसकी सीमाएँ मनोजगत से व्यवहार-जगत तक और राजसत्ता से परिवार तक फैली हैं। दूसरे पक्ष में होते हुए भी स्त्री पाले के दूसरी तरफ़ नहीं है। वह उपनिवेश के बीच में खड़ी है। उपनिवेश के ख़िलाफ़ संघर्ष उसका आत्म-संघर्ष भी है और यही स्थिति स्त्री को समझने की मुश्किलों के कारण बनी हुई है। स्त्री मुक्ति-कामना से छटपटा रही है लेकिन उपनिवेश के वर्चस्व से उसका मनोजगत आज भी आक्रान्त है। गुज़रे ज़मानों के उपनिवेशवाद विरोधी संघर्षों की तरह औरत की दुनिया के सिपहसालार उपनिवेश के साथ हाथ-भर का वह अन्तराल स्थापित नहीं कर पाए हैं जो इस लड़ाई में कामयाबी की पहली शर्त है। ‘उपनिवेश में स्त्री : मुक्ति-कामना की दस वार्ताएँ’ इस अन्तराल की स्थापना की दिशा में एक प्रयास है। ये वार्ताएँ कारख़ाने और दफ़्तर में काम करती हुई स्त्री, लिखती-रचती हुई स्त्री, प्रेम के द्वन्द्व में उलझी हुई स्त्री, मानवीय गरिमा की खोज में जुटी हुई स्त्री, बौद्धिक बनती हुई स्त्री और भाषा व विमर्श के संजाल में फँसी हुई स्त्री से सम्बन्धित हैं।
