- Description: यशपाल के उपन्यास ‘दिव्या’ का प्रकाशन 1945 में हुआ था। उपन्यास के प्रकाशन के साथ ही यह ऐतिहासिक कथानक का उपन्यास होने के कारण उसी रूप में अपनी पैठ बना रहा था। कई बार इसके कथ्य को ध्यान में रखते हुए इसे बौद्धकालीन उपन्यास कहा गया है। जैसा कि ऐतिहासिक उपन्यासों के साथ अक्सर होता है 'दिव्या' के साथ भी वही परम्परा चल पड़ी अर्थात् उपन्यास के कथानक को बौद्धकालीन प्रामाणिकता पर परखना आलोचकों ने समीचीन समझा। बहरहाल। गोपाल राय की ‘उपन्यास की पहचान’ शृंखला में ‘दिव्या’ पाँचवीं पुस्तक है। आलोचक ने अपने स्तर पर न केवल कथानक की समीचीनता की पड़ताल की है बल्कि ‘अतीत, इतिहास और उपन्यास’ पर एक अध्याय भी इस पुस्तक के आरम्भ में रख दिया है। मूलत: मूल रचनाओं की पड़ताल करते हुए आलोचक मूल पाठ की व्यावहारिक आलोचना को भी प्राथमिकता देते हैं। ‘दिव्या’ के मूल पाठ पर गोपाल राय ने इन्हीं कड़ियों को सूत्रबद्ध करने का कार्य किया है। जैसे कि ‘दिव्या’ का कथा-संसार और उसके मार्मिक प्रसंग, पात्र, ऐतिहासिकता की कसौटी, दिव्या में चित्रित समाज और भारतीय संस्कृति अस्मितामूलक नारी-विमर्श की झलक, शिल्प और भाषा आदि-आदि की रचनात्मकता के स्तर पर गोपाल राय ने उपन्यास को खँघालने का महत्ती कार्य पूरा किया है। अत: उक्त आयामों की विविधता में उपन्यास की दृष्टि से दिव्या का मूल्यांकन गोपाल राय का इस आलोचनात्मक पुस्तक में प्राथमिक ध्येय रहा है। इस कार्य में वे कितनी उत्कृष्टता प्राप्त कर पाए हैं यह इस पुस्तक के अध्ययन से स्पष्ट होगा। यह भी ज्ञान होगा कि पाठ्यक्रमों की सीमाओं को पार करते हुए कोई आलोच्य कृति कितनी समयानुकूल और प्रासंगिक ठहरती है।

राष्ट्रवाद जिस रूप में आज हमारे सामने है, उसे वजूद में आए सौ साल से ज़्यादा हो गए हैं। दुनिया के इतिहास में इसकी भूमिका को लेकर अनेक इतिहासकारों, राजनीतिशास्त्रियों और समाजवैज्ञानिकों ने अध्ययन किया है। देखा गया है कि राजनीति के लिए यह सबसे निर्णायक कारकों में से एक रहा है। इसकी आलोचना भी ख़ूब हुई है। यह एक दोधारी तलवार है जो लोगों को जोड़ भी सकती है और राजनीति, संस्कृति, भाषा और धर्म के आधार पर बाँट भी सकती है।
ऐतिहासिक महत्त्व के इस संकलन में इतिहासकार एस. इरफ़ान हबीब उन्नीसवीं सदी के उत्तरार्द्ध से भारत में राष्ट्रवाद के उदय, विकास और इसके विभिन्न रूपों और चरणों की पड़ताल भारत के सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण चिन्तकों और नेताओं के विचारों के माध्यम से करते हैं। इस संकलन में उन्होंने स्वतंत्रता आन्दोलन के प्रमुख नेताओं और चिन्तकों के वे लेख और भाषण-अंश काफ़ी तलाश के बाद एकत्रित किए हैं जो स्पष्ट करते हैं कि आज़ादी के संघर्ष में देश को रास्ता दिखाने वाले और आज़ादी के बाद भी राष्ट्र की दशा-दिशा पर ईमानदार निगाह रखने वाले इन नेताओं की नज़र में राष्ट्रवाद क्या था और वे किस तरह के राष्ट्र और राष्ट्रवाद को फलते-फूलते देखना चाहते थे!
यह किताब हमें बताती है कि आज की परिस्थितियों में हम राष्ट्रवाद को कैसे समझें और कैसे उसे आगे बढ़ायें ताकि एक सर्वसमावेशी, स्वतंत्र और मानवीय राष्ट्र के निर्माण की प्रक्रिया बिना किसी अवरोध के जारी रह सके।
