अतीत कभी सम्पूर्ण रूप से व्यतीत नहीं होता। बहुआयामी समय के साथ वह भिन्न–भिन्न रूपों में प्रकट होता रहता है। इतिहास अतीत का उत्खनन करते हुए उसमें व्याप्त सभ्यता, संस्कृति, नैतिकता, अन्तर्विरोध, अन्त:संघर्ष, विचार एवं विमर्श आदि के सूत्रों को व्यापक सामाजिक हित में उद्घाटित करता है। कारण अनेक हैं किन्तु इस यथार्थ को स्वीकारना होगा कि भारतीय समाज का इतिहास लिखते समय ‘दलित समाज’ के साथ सम्यक् न्याय नहीं किया गया। भारतीय समाज की संरचना, सुव्यवस्था, सुरक्षा व समृद्धि में ‘दलित समाज’ का महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान होते हुए भी उसकी ‘योजनापूर्ण उपेक्षा’ की गई। ‘भारतीय दलित आन्दोलन’ का इतिहास (चार खंड) इस उपेक्षा का रचनात्मक प्रतिकार एवं वृहत्तर भारतीय इतिहास में दलित समाज की भूमिका रेखांकित करने का ऐतिहासिक उपक्रम है।
सुप्रसिद्ध दलित रचनाकार, सम्पादक एवं मनीषी मोहनदास नैमिशराय ने प्राय: दो दशकों के अथक अनुसन्धान के उपरान्त इस ग्रन्थ की रचना की है। दलित समाज, दलित अस्मिता–विमर्श तथा दलित आन्दोलन का प्रामाणिक दस्तावेज़ीकरण एवं तार्किक विश्लेषण करता यह ग्रन्थ एक विरल उपलब्धि है। आधुनिक भारतीय समाज की समतामूलक संकल्पना को पुष्ट और प्रशस्त करते हुए मोहनदास नैमिशराय स्वतंत्रता, समता, न्याय और बन्धुत्व जैसे शब्दों का यथार्थवादी परीक्षण भी करते हैं।
वस्तुत: भारतीय दलित आन्दोलन का इतिहास हज़ारों वर्ष पुराने भारतीय समाज की सशक्त सभ्यता–समीक्षा है। ग्रन्थ का प्रथम भाग ‘पूर्व आम्बेडकर भारत’ में निहित सामाजिक सच्चाइयों को उद्घाटित करता है। मध्यकालीन सन्तों के सुधारवादी आन्दोलन से प्रारम्भ कर दलित देवदासी प्रश्न, भंगी समाज, जाटव, महार, दुसाध, कोली, चांडाल और धानुक आदि जातियों के उल्लेखनीय इतिहास; ईसाइयत और इस्लाम से दलित के रिश्ते; आम्बेडकर से पहले बौद्ध धर्म एवं दक्षिण भारत में जातीय संरचना आदि का प्रामाणिक विवरण–विश्लेषण है। दलित आन्दोलन में अग्रणी व्यक्तित्वों, सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं व संस्थाओं का वर्णन है। पंजाब और उत्तराखंड में दलित आन्दोलन की प्रक्रिया और उसके परिणाम रेखांकित हैं।
