- Description: 1967 में मेडिकल कॉलेज में मेरे द्वितीय वर्ष के दौरान सनातन में मेरी रुचि जर्मन सार्शनिक आर्थर शोपेनहावर की एक पंक्ति से शुरू हुई। मैंने शिवमूर्ति को देखा और जन पाया, इसका जिक्र मेरी इसी किताब में है । पश्चिमी विचारों के प्रभाव में मैं भी मूर्तिपूजा को एक रूढ़िवादी मानसिकता मानता था। मुझे लगा कि हजारों साल से चली आ रही ये मान्यताएँ जिन्हें लोगों ने अंधविश्वास कहकर खारिज कर दिया है, निरर्थक तो नहीं हो सकतीं, जैसे मंगलवार को बाल न कटवाना, हनुमान की नाराजगी से डरना या शनिदेव के कोप से बचने के लिए शनिवार को लोहा न खरीदना । मैं यह सब सोचने लगा । ऐसा लगता है कि ये रीति- रिवाज नाइयों और लोहारों को एक दिन की छुट्टी देने के लिए बनाए गए थे। मार्च महीने में जब घर में शीतला माता की पूजा के लिए बासी भोजन की व्यवस्था देखी तो लगा कि समाज को यह संदेश दिया जा रहा था कि गरमियाँ शुरू होते ही बासी भोजन खाना बंद कर दें। फिर तो मैं सनातन की यात्रा पर निकल पड़ा। मैंने अंधविश्वास कहे ही जाने वाली मान्यताओं पर लोगों से अपने विचार साझा किए और चर्चाओं में शामिल हुआ, लोगों से सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रियाएँ प्राप्त हुईं। मैं यह दावा नहीं करता कि मेरे विचार सौ प्रतिशत सही हैं, लेकिन मैं विश्वास के साथ कह सकता हूँ कि चिकित्सा ज्ञान में मेरी वैज्ञानिक पृष्ठभूमि ने निश्चित रूप से मुझे सनातन प्रथाओं को समझने में सक्षम बनाया है।

अस्सी के दशक में लिखे गए इन पत्रों में निर्मल जी की वह दुनिया दिखाई देती है; जिसके बहुत कम हिस्से से हम परिचित हैं। इनमें उनका अकेलापन भी दिखता है, और संवादप्रियता भी, लेखक के रूप में अपनी नियति का सामना करने की तैयारी भी और समकालीनों के षड्यंत्रों-आक्षेपों-प्रहारों को समझते-जानते हुए उनसे अछूते रहने की उनकी नैतिक शक्ति भी।
इसी पुस्तक में शामिल अपने वक्तव्य में रमेशचन्द्र शाह लिखते हैं, ‘निर्मल जी सभा-संगोष्ठियों में शिरकत करते हुए जितना सबके साथ होते थे, उतना ही अपने साथ। अन्तर्मुखता की शर्तों पर ही वे पर्याप्त बहिर्मुखता का भी निर्वाह किस ख़ूबी से कर पाते थे, एक समूची पीढ़ी इसकी गवाह है। यही ख़ूबी उनके ‘पत्रों’ में भी है।... सेल्फ़ रिवीलिंग, स्व-संवेदी, आत्मोद्घाटक; किन्तु स्व-केन्द्रित कदापि नहीं।’
इन पत्रों में अनेक पुस्तकों, लेखकों और पत्र-पत्रिकाओं के हवालों के साथ-साथ तत्कालीन हिन्दी-संसार और विश्व-साहित्य की हलचलों की भी जानकारी प्राप्त होती चलती है जिससे पाठक को उस दौर को जानने और निर्मल जी के कथाकार व चिन्तक रूप को समझने में भी मदद मिलती है।
