‘रामचरितमानस’ सोलहवीं सदी में पुनः कही गई रामकथा है जिसमें राम का दर्पण रूप प्रतिबिम्बित है और यहाँ राम देवपद पर प्रतिष्ठित हो गए हैं। यहाँ राम द्विज हैं और उनकी कथा भी दो बार कही गई।
रामकथा का एक तृतीयांश आदर्श पुरुष राम का, दूसरी तिहाई राजाराम की और अन्तिम अंश वैरागी यात्री राम का है। यहाँ रामनगर में समानान्तर अंक हैं—नगर में जहाँ सुख-सुविधा है, अविकसित ग्राम हैं और वन हैं, वहीं आदिवासी, साधु-सन्त और वैरागी भी रहते हैं। ‘रामनगर रामलीला’ का अद्भुत प्रसंग है—कोट बिदाई। एक राजा द्वारा दूसरे राजा का स्वागत-सत्कार और फिर स्वरूपों को देवरूप मानकर विधिवत् पूजा करता है।
‘रामनगर रामलीला’ की यात्राएँ देखें—एक तो राम जी की बारात है जो अयोध्या से जनकपुर जाती है, फिर विदाई यात्रा है जिसमें वर-वधू जनकपुर से अयोध्या आते हैं। वनयात्रा और भरत की चित्रकूट नंदीग्राम की लम्बी यात्रा है। भरत-मिलन लंका से अयोध्या की यात्रा है।
‘रामनगर रामलीला’ में लोककला चरम उत्कर्ष पर पहुँच गई है। लोककला की सीमा में सौन्दर्यबोध का अपूर्व विकास हुआ।
