India, a land with diverse cultures and languages, has a wide range of people with multiple choices of reading books. Some binge on English language and some on Regional language. India is home to many authors who write about different genres in different languages. A country that stands seventh in the world for book publishing has a big chunk of readers who love reading many famous authors. 

Also, such readers have given a chance to many famous authors who gave India a comprehensive and good range of books for a bibliophile.

Let’s get a closer look at different types of book readers found in India. 

According to a Youth Readership Survey done to find the reader base in India, there are 459 million youths in India, out of which 333 million are literate youth, of which 83.4 million read books which means a 25% ratio of literate folks enjoys reading books. If we see it more broadly, we can see that 47% of book readers are from urban India and 53% from rural India. 

The same survey also says that there are 5.3% of English book readers, 13.2% of readers prefer the Marathi language, 33.4% of readers prefer Hindi, and 7.7% prefer Bengali language books for leisure reading. According to a survey, 46% chose reading for ‘Knowledge Enhancement,’ and 19-20% chose reading for ‘pleasure and relaxation.’ 

One common thing among readers is their love for books! From fiction to action, every book is on the list for readers; A few love reading in English, and some love reading in different languages but for a bookworm it is what they love! There are five types of readers; let’s know about them in detail:

  1. Book Accumulator: The ones who love collecting many books or are obsessed with making a library on their own. 
  2. It’s a weekend binge: Those who hop on their favourite books during weekends. 
  3. Obsessed Readers: These types of readers are the ones who can read anything; if they see anything, they’ll read.
  4. Love for Author: These types of readers read everything their favourite author has written; they won’t miss a chance to read or binge on them. 
  5. Love for the fiction world: These types of readers are the ones who want to read and stay in their fictional world, so they binge all day long on such books. 

Although there is a different love for paperbacks, digital transformation has made the choices much easier for readers; now, we have a wide range of books and a chunk of audiobook listeners. There are many ebooks; according to some publishers, their ebooks are 2% to 5% of their business. Ebooks are becoming a ray of success for small-scale publishers to reach their target audience.
