बच्चे स्वभावत: परस्पर धर्म, जाति, वर्ण, वर्ग, सम्प्रदाय को लेकर भेदभाव नहीं रखते। उनका दिल स्वच्छ, काग़ज़ की भाँति निर्मल होता है। उनमें हम जैसे संस्कार डालते हैं, उन्हीं के अनुरूप उनका चरित्र बनता है। उनके शारीरिक विकास के लिए जैसे बलवर्धक आहार की आवश्यकता होती है, उसी प्रकार उनके बौद्धिक विकास के लिए उत्तम साहित्य की नितान्त आवश्यकता है।
बच्चों में कहानी सुनने की प्रवृत्ति जन्मजात है। आयु की वृद्धि के साथ उनमें कहानी पढ़ने की रुचि और प्रवृत्ति भी बढ़ती जाती है। अत: उनकी रुचि के पोषण एवं परिष्कार के लिए स्वस्थ साहित्य एक सबल माध्यम बन सकता है।
