राष्ट्रवाद क्या है? राष्ट्रवाद से आप क्या समझते हैं? अच्छा राष्ट्रवादी कौन है? अगर आप सरकार की आलोचना करें तो क्या आपको राष्ट्रद्रोही मान लिया जाए? ये कुछ ऐसे प्रश्न हैं जो आजकल की ज़्यादातर बहसों में हावी रहते हैं? लेकिन ये बहसें नई नहीं हैं। आज राष्ट्रवाद के बारे में सबसे ऊपर सुनाई देनेवाली आवाज़ें ज़रूर हमें यह विश्वास दिलाने पर आमादा हैं कि भारतीय राष्ट्रवाद एक संकीर्ण, संकुचित और दूसरे लोगों और संस्कृतियों से भयभीत कोई चीज़ रहा है और आज भी ऐसा ही है, लेकिन भारत के सबसे प्रबुद्ध और सुलझे हुए नेताओं, चिन्तकों, वैज्ञानिकों और लेखकों की समझ इससे बिलकुल अलग है; और ये वो लोग हैं जिन्होंने उन्नीसवीं सदी के आरम्भ से ही इस विषय पर सोचना शुरू कर दिया था।
राष्ट्रवाद जिस रूप में आज हमारे सामने है, उसे वजूद में आए सौ साल से ज़्यादा हो गए हैं। दुनिया के इतिहास में इसकी भूमिका को लेकर अनेक इतिहासकारों, राजनीतिशास्त्रियों और समाजवैज्ञानिकों ने अध्ययन किया है। देखा गया है कि राजनीति के लिए यह सबसे निर्णायक कारकों में से एक रहा है। इसकी आलोचना भी ख़ूब हुई है। यह एक दोधारी तलवार है जो लोगों को जोड़ भी सकती है और राजनीति, संस्कृति, भाषा और धर्म के आधार पर बाँट भी सकती है।
ऐतिहासिक महत्त्व के इस संकलन में इतिहासकार एस. इरफ़ान हबीब उन्नीसवीं सदी के उत्तरार्द्ध से भारत में राष्ट्रवाद के उदय, विकास और इसके विभिन्न रूपों और चरणों की पड़ताल भारत के सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण चिन्तकों और नेताओं के विचारों के माध्यम से करते हैं। इस संकलन में उन्होंने स्वतंत्रता आन्दोलन के प्रमुख नेताओं और चिन्तकों के वे लेख और भाषण-अंश काफ़ी तलाश के बाद एकत्रित किए हैं जो स्पष्ट करते हैं कि आज़ादी के संघर्ष में देश को रास्ता दिखाने वाले और आज़ादी के बाद भी राष्ट्र की दशा-दिशा पर ईमानदार निगाह रखने वाले इन नेताओं की नज़र में राष्ट्रवाद क्या था और वे किस तरह के राष्ट्र और राष्ट्रवाद को फलते-फूलते देखना चाहते थे!
यह किताब हमें बताती है कि आज की परिस्थितियों में हम राष्ट्रवाद को कैसे समझें और कैसे उसे आगे बढ़ायें ताकि एक सर्वसमावेशी, स्वतंत्र और मानवीय राष्ट्र के निर्माण की प्रक्रिया बिना किसी अवरोध के जारी रह सके।

- Description: सवर्णवाद के सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक वर्चस्व को चुनौती देनेवाले दलित साहित्य का आधार आधुनिक संवैधानिक मूल्य, मानव की सार्वभौमिक समानता और प्रजातंत्र में विश्वास है, और प्रेरणा का स्रोत उस अनन्त पीड़ा में है जो इस देश की दलित जातियों ने सदियों-सदियों अकारण और बिना कोई प्रतिरोध किए सही है। सन् 1914 में ‘सरस्वती’ में प्रकाशित हीरा डोम की कविता ‘अछूत की शिकायत’ से आरम्भ मानी जानेवाली दलित साहित्य की यात्रा अठारहवीं-उन्नीसवीं सदी के सामाजिक-राजनीतिक अदालतों और आज़ादी के बाद संविधान से मिले नए स्पेस से होती हुई आज एक स्थापित धारा का रूप ले चुकी है। मात्र प्रतिरोध और आक्रोश की कलाहीन अभिव्यक्ति के आरोपों को झुठलाते हुए अपनी रचनात्मकता को उसने एक भिन्न सौन्दर्यशास्त्रीय ज़मीन भी दी है। प्रस्तुत संचयिता पिछली पूरी शताब्दी की दलित मनीषा के प्रमुख पड़ावों को संकलित करने का हिन्दी में सम्भवतः पहला सर्वांगीण प्रयास है। विद्रोह की तीव्र आकांक्षा को बेलाग स्वर में वाणी देनेवाली कविता, दलित जन के संघर्ष को गहराई से रेखांकित करनेवाली कहानी, दलित जीवन के अन्तर्बाह्य रेशों की व्याख्या करनेवाले उपन्यासों की स्वानुभूत पीड़ा की प्रामाणिक अभिव्यक्ति, आत्मकथा और अपनी पहचान के लिए लड़ रही रचना को ठोस वैचारिक आधार प्रदान करनेवाली आलोचना, सभी विधाओं का सम्यक् प्रतिनिधित्व इसमें हुआ है। उद्देश्य यही है कि दलित साहित्य के पाठकों, अध्येताओं और छात्रों को पीड़ा और प्रतिकार से उपजी सन्दर्भमूलक रचनाएँ एक जिल्द में उपलब्ध हो सकें; और दलित साहित्य का मूल स्वर कुछ प्रमुख रचनाओं के माध्यम से सामने लाया जाए। संचयिता में उनतीस कवियों की कविताएँ, तेरह कहानियाँ, सात महत्त्वपूर्ण उपन्यास-अंश, छह आत्मकथा-अंश और आठ आलोचनात्मक आलेख शामिल हैं।
