जब दिल्ली की गद्दी पर शाहजहाँ का शासन था, उस समय बुंदेलखंड की गद्दी पर राजा जुझार सिंह आसीन थे। राजा जुझार सिंह के छोटे भाई थे—कुँवर हरदौल।
यह उपन्यास कुँवर हरदौल के जीवन पर आधारित है। कुँवर हरदौल को उनकी माँ मरते समय जुझार सिंह की पत्नी रानी चंपावती को सौंपकर गई थीं। रानी चंपावती ने हरदौल को अपने पुत्र की तरह पाला था और हरदौल भी अपनी माँ की तरह ही उनका सम्मान करते थे, लेकिन राजनैतिक षड्यंत्र के चलते शाहजहाँ के बहकावे में आकर राजा जुझार सिंह ने माँ-बेटे के इस पवित्र संबंध पर कालिमा पोत दी और अपनी पत्नी को उसके ही हाथों हरदौल को विष देने पर मजबूर कर दिया था।
