‘क्रान्तिकारी कवि निराला’ हिन्दी के महाप्राण कवि निराला के काव्यगत विकास-क्रम को उनके वैयक्तिक संघर्ष के सन्दर्भ में देखते हुए उनके जीवन, तत्कालीन परिस्थितियों और उनकी कविता की विशिष्टताओं का विवेचन करती है।
गौरतलब है कि यह पुस्तक उस समय लिखी गई थी, जब हिन्दी आलोचना में निराला के कृतित्व को लेकर कोई सुसंयोजित काम नहीं हुआ था। गिराला और उनके समय के साथ-साथ यह पुस्तक छायावाद तथा उससे पहले की काव्य-प्रवृत्तियों पर भी टिप्पणी करती चलती है, विशेषतया छायावाद पर।
डॉ. बच्चन सिंह कहते हैं कि छायावादी काव्य-सर्जना का सम्बन्ध कवि की निजी प्रेरणा से रहा और यह पारम्परिक कवि-प्रतिभा से भिन्न चीज थी। छायावादी या रोमैंटिक कवि के लिए उसके रचनात्मक क्षणों का महत्त्व सर्वोपरि होता है। इसीलिए निराला की कविता को समझने के लिए भी उनके व्यक्ति को जानना जरूरी है। इसी से हम यह जान पाते हैं कि प्रगतिवादी नहीं होते हुए भी उनकी कविता इतनी प्रगतिपरक कैसे है, और प्रयोगवादी न होते हुए भी कविताओं में इतने रूपात्मक प्रयोग वे कैसे कर सके।
निराला के परिचय से लेकर यह पुस्तक उनकी कविता के निर्णायक पड़ावों से होती हुई उनकी रचना-प्रक्रिया के विश्लेषण तक जाती है। संलग्न परिशिष्ट में संकलित ‘राम की शक्तिपूजा’ और निराला की अंतिम कविता की समीक्षा इसे और संग्रहणीय बना देती है।

अज्ञेय हिन्दी के बहुआयामी, साथ ही विवादास्पद लेखक हैं। प्रेमचन्दोत्तर काल में ‘गोदान’ के आदर्शोन्मुख यथार्थवाद के बाद मनोवैज्ञानिक यथार्थवाद का यह मॉडल इस दृष्टि से भी महत्त्वपूर्ण है कि इसकी प्रभावछाया में साहित्य का एक बड़ा भाग आता जा रहा है। द्वितीय विश्वयुद्ध की छाया, भारतीय स्वाधीनता-संग्राम, साहित्य में पश्चिमी प्रभाव की छाया, किशोर से युवा के बीच के कालखंड, युवा मन के अन्तर्द्वन्द्व, अहंकार, विद्रोह और सेक्स के नकारने-स्वीकारने की मनःस्थितियाँ, प्रयोग, रूमानियत से लबरेज़ तरल लाक्षणिक विडम्बनात्मक व्यंजना में रसे-बसे हैं अज्ञेय के उपन्यास—‘शेखर एक जीवनी’ (दो भाग), ‘नदी के द्वीप’ और ‘अपने-अपने अजनबी’। ‘शेखर एक जीवनी’ में एक विद्रोही की निर्मिति उसके घात-प्रतिघात से उसके विकसित या विपर्ययग्रस्त होने की दास्तान है। क़िस्सागोई के अभ्यस्त पाठकों को इस उपन्यास में एक नया ही अस्वाद मिलेगा—स्मृतियों का विश्लेषण, परिनिष्ठित काव्यात्मक और व्यंजनात्मक भाषा की बौद्धिकता की तप्त ख़ुशबू। ‘नदी का द्वीप’ अपनी काव्यात्मक सूक्ष्म दृश्यात्मक परिनिष्ठित भाषा, प्रेम की उदात्तता, व्यंजना और बौद्धिकता के स्तर पर ‘शेखर एक जीवनी’ की अगली कड़ी है जिसमें रेखा, गौरा, भुवन का या फिर इनके साथ चन्द्र मोहन का एक त्रिकोण बनता है जो गहरे झाँकने पर कामायनी के श्रद्धा, इड़ा, मनु के त्रिकोण का प्रतिबिम्ब लग सकता है। प्रेम कथाएँ चाहे अनचाहे त्रिकोणात्मक बन ही जाती हैं, जिनमें किसी-न-किसी कोण को स्थगित होना होता है। तीसरा उपन्यास ‘अपने-अपने अजनबी’ इस अर्थ में प्रायोगिक और प्रायोजित उपन्यास है, वहाँ जान-बूझकर एक नाटकीय स्थिति का निर्माण किया गया है। इस स्थिति में मृत्यु की प्रतीक्षा कर रही दो औरतें हैं—‘योके’ और ‘सेल्मा’। पृष्ठभूमि विदेशी, ‘योके’ युवा है और ‘सेल्मा’ वृद्धा। बर्फ़ का पहाड़ टूटकर उस घर पर गिरा है और दोनों औरतें एक तरह से बर्फ़ की क़ब्र में क़ैद हो गई हैं। तथता के शिल्पकार अज्ञेय काव्य-भाषा, व्यंजना और आत्मवाची कथा संरचना करते चलते हैं। पात्र भी उन्होंने ऐसे ही विशिष्ट चुने हैं। उपन्यास का ढाँचा भी परम्परागत उपन्यास लेखन से विद्रोह है।
