भारत में सूफी काव्य-परंपरा काफी समृद्ध रही है। मुसलमान कवियों ने पंजाब में सूफी काव्य की बुनियाद रखी, जिनमें शेख फरीद सर्वोपरि हैं। उनका पूरा नाम फरीदुद्दीन मसऊद शक्करगंज है। दरअसल, शेख फरीद से ही भारतीय सूफी काव्य का आरंभ माना जाता है। फरीद का जन्म हिजरी 569 अर्थात् 1173 ईसवी में हुआ। उस दिन मोहर्रम की पहली तारीख थी। फरीद के पिता उनकी बाल्यावस्था में ही गुजर गए थे। उनकी माता ने ही उनके पालन-पोषण व शिक्षा की जिम्मेदारी पूरे फकीरी तथा दरवेशी ढंग से निभाई। उन्होंने बचपन से ही बालक फरीद को खुदापरस्ती की शिक्षा दी। पवित्र तथा संत स्वभाववाली माता की देखरेख में फरीद बचपन से ही प्रभु-भक्त हो गए। किशोर अवस्था में फरीद अपने सूफियाना स्वभाव के कारण कोतवाल (खोतवाल) में प्रसिद्ध हो गए थे।
