बनारसीदास जैन ने 'अर्धकथा' (1641) में लिखा कि 'गर्भित कथा कहाँ हिय खोल।' छिपाए जानेवाले या कहें कि गोपन प्रसंगों को भी दिल खोलकर अथवा खुलकर बताना आत्मकथा को प्रसिद्धि दिलाता है, निवैयक्तिक बनाता है। आत्मकथा चर्चित विधा है और आत्मकथा- लेखन की एक समृद्ध परम्परा है, लेकिन यह आलोचना से परे विधा हो, ऐसा भी नहीं है। बाबू बनारसीदास चतुर्वेदी ने आत्मकथा लेखक की पात्रता का सवाल उठाया था। चतुर्वेदी जी ने 'जागरण' में यह सवाल उठाया था कि आत्मकथा किसे लिखनी चाहिए। भाव यह था कि आत्मकथा किसे नहीं लिखनी चाहिए। हालाँकि उनके द्वारा तय की गई शर्तों पर आगे लोगों ने आत्मकथा लिखी, ऐसा भी नहीं है। जब प्रेमचन्द ने 'हंस' का आत्मकथांक (1932) निकाला तो नन्ददुलारे वाजपेयी ने यह कहकर विरोध किया था कि इससे आत्म-विज्ञापन का भाव बढ़ेगा जो कि हिन्दी के हित में नहीं होगा।
लेखिकाओं की आत्मकथा में स्त्री-वेदना के विविध स्वर सुनाई पड़ते हैं। इनकी वेदना समस्त स्त्रियों को शोषण के खिलाफ विरोध की ताकत देती है। इन्होंने अपने आत्मकथा-साहित्य के द्वारा जहाँ स्त्री करुणा, शोक, वेदना, विवशता को व्यक्त किया वहीं उसे हिंसा, शोषण, अत्याचार के खिलाफ आवाज उठाने की शक्ति भी प्रदान की। इन्होंने स्त्री स्वतन्त्रता, समानता, सम्मान, सहभागिता इत्यादि जैसे प्रश्नों पर विचार करते हुए पितृसत्तात्मक व्यवस्था से स्त्री-मुक्ति की भी वकालत की।
आत्मकथाओं में अपने भीतर की यात्रा के जरिये बाहर का जो सफ़र तय होता है उसमें केवल अपनी दुनिया की ही बात नहीं होती है पूरा सामयिक सन्दर्भ आ जाना स्वाभाविक है। दलित आत्मकथाओं को आत्मकथात्मक उपन्यास यूँ ही नहीं कहा जाता है। जीवन का पूरा विस्तार है यथार्थ को देखने की एक नई दृष्टि के साथ ये आत्मकथाएँ हिन्दी साहित्य के मुख्य धारा के साहित्य की चेतना को झकझोरती हैं और उसकी चली आ रही परम्परा में एक तरह की वैचारिक हलचल पैदा करती हैं, दलित आत्मकथाएँ, साहित्य की दुनिया में निर्मित 'औदात्य' की धारणा को बदलकर रख देती हैं और जीवन के नए-नए मुहावरों के बीच अपने पाठकों को ले जाकर खड़ा करती हैं।

लोक-साहित्य लोक-संस्कृति की एक महत्त्वपूर्ण इकाई है। यह इसका अविच्छिन्न अंग अथवा अवयव है। जब से लोक-साहित्य का भारतीय विश्वविद्यालयों में अध्ययन तथा अध्यापन के लिए प्रवेश हुआ है, तब से इस विषय को लेकर अनेक महत्त्वपूर्ण ग्रन्थों की रचना हुई है। प्रस्तुत ग्रन्थ को छह खंडों तथा 18 अध्यायों में विभक्त किया गया है।
प्रथम अध्याय में लोक-संस्कृति शब्द के जन्म की कथा, इसका अर्थ, इसकी परिभाषा, सभ्यता और संस्कृति में अन्तर, लोक-साहित्य तथा लोक-संस्कृति में अन्तर, हिन्दी में फोक लोर का समानार्थक शब्द लोक-संस्कृति तथा लोक-संस्कृति के विराट स्वरूप की मीमांसा की गई है। दि्वतीय अध्याय में लोक-संस्कृति के अध्ययन का इतिहास प्रस्तुत किया गया है। यूरोप के विभिन्न देशों जैसे—जर्मनी, फ़्रांस, इंग्लैंड, स्वीडेन तथा फ़िनलैंड आदि में लोक-साहित्य का अध्ययन किन विद्वानों द्वारा किया गया, इसकी संक्षिप्त चर्चा की गई है।
दि्वतीय खंड पूर्णतया लोक-विश्वासों से सम्बन्धित है। अतः आकाश-लोक और भू-लोक में जितनी भी वस्तुएँ उपलब्ध हैं और उनके सम्बन्ध में जो भी लोक-विश्वास समाज में प्रचलित है, उनका सांगोपांग विवेचन इस खंड में प्रस्तुत किया गया है।
तीसरे खंड में सामाजिक संस्थाओं का वर्णन किया है जिसमें दो अध्याय हैं—(1) वर्ण और आश्रम तथा (2) संस्कार। वर्ण के अन्तर्गत ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य एवं शूद्रों के कर्तव्य, अधिकार तथा समाज में इनके स्थान का प्रतिपादन किया गया है। चौथे खंड में आश्रम वाले प्रकरण में चारों आश्रमों की चर्चा की गई है। जातिप्रथा से होनेवाले लाभ तथा हानियों की चर्चा के पश्चात् संयुक्त परिवार के सदस्यों के कर्तव्यों का परिचय दिया गया है।
पंचम खंड में ललित कलाओं का विवरण प्रस्तुत किया गया है। इन कलाओं के अन्तर्गत संगीतकला, नृत्यकला, नाट्यकला, वास्तुकला, चित्रकला, मूर्तिकला आती हैं। संगीत लोकगीतों का प्राण है। इसके बिना लोकगीत निष्प्राण, निर्जीव तथा नीरस है।
षष्ठ तथा अन्तिम खंड में लोक-साहित्य का समास रूप में विवेचन प्रस्तुत किया गया है। लोक-साहित्य का पाँच श्रेणियों में विभाजन करके, प्रत्येक वर्ग की विशिष्टता दिखलाई गई है।
