वर्तमान में बढ़ता प्रदूषण, कम होते वन, घटते वन्य जीव, प्राकृतिक सम्पदा का अत्यधिक दोहन, प्रकृति के संसाधनों की ओर बढ़ती उपभोग की प्रवृत्ति, अवैध एवं अनियोजित ढंग से वनों की कटान, जलवायु परिवर्तन, जनसंख्या वृद्धि, पृथ्वी का अन्धाधुन्ध दोहन, ओजोन परत का क्षरण, तेजाबी वर्षा, ग्लोबल वार्मिंग, जल में अपशिष्ट का 'मिलना, भूस्खलन, सूखा, बाढ़ एवं जैव विविधता पर कुप्रभाव आदि कारकों के कारण पर्यावरण 'असन्तुलित हो रहा है जिससे यह विश्वव्यापी समस्या बन गयी है जो चिन्ताजनक है।

भारतीय संस्कृति सदैव पर्यावरण की पोषक रही है। इसमें पर्यावरण के अवयव तथा जल, आकाश, सूर्य, चन्द्र, वनस्पति एवं कतिपय जीव-जन्तुओं को पूज्य मानने की मान्यताएँ रही हैं जो पर्यावरण के 'संरक्षण से जुड़ी हैं। पर्यावरण का सम्बन्ध केवल संस्कृति से ही नहीं है अपितु संस्कारों तथा सरोकारों से भी है। हमारी संस्कृति में स्वच्छता को भक्ति का स्थान दिया गया है। वृक्ष, वन एवं वनस्पति पृथ्वी के आभूषण और प्रकृति के उपहार हैं और धरती तो माँ है। जब तक मानव प्रकृति का भाग रहता है, प्रकृति उनका संरक्षण करती है। प्रकृति स्वतः पेड़ लगाती रहती है, हमें तो उनका संरक्षण करना है। इस कृति के द्वारा पर्यावरण संरक्षण के प्रति चेतना जगाने का प्रयास किया गया है।

मनोविज्ञान मानव-समस्याओं के सम्यक् ज्ञान एवं समाधान के लिए समुचित दृष्टिकोण उपस्थित करता है। व्यक्ति में समुचित दृष्टिकोण का विकास हो, इसके लिए यह अनिवार्य है कि उसे मानव-जीवन-सम्बन्धी तथ्यों एवं सामान्य सिद्धान्तों का ज्ञान हो तथा वह इनकी खोज की विधियों से भलीभाँति परिचित हो। समुचित दृष्टिकोण का तात्पर्य है व्यक्ति की अवैयक्तिक (Impersonal) एवं वस्तुनिष्ठ (Objective) मनोवृत्ति। ऐसी मनोवृत्ति अपनाकर ही मनोवैज्ञानिक मानव-समस्याओं की खोज करता है। फलतः वह असामान्य व्यक्तियों (Abnormal individuals) को परामर्श, सहायता अथवा चिकित्सा का पात्र समझता है, न कि घृणा का। चोरी, हत्या जैसे असामाजिक कार्यों में संलग्न अपराधियों के प्रति भी वह घृणा के बदले सहानुभूति की मनोवृत्ति रखता है। इसी भाँति प्रतिदिन के जीवन में घटित होनेवाले सभी व्यवहारों के प्रति भी, चाहे वे वांछनीय हों अथवा अवांछनीय, अवैयक्तिक एवं वस्तुनिष्ठ मनोवृत्ति अपनाकर ही विचार करता है।

उपन्यास की रचना-प्रक्रिया तो सैद्धान्तिकी गढ़ती ही है लेकिन एक आलोचक का दायित्व होता है कि वह रचना को व्यावहारिक मनोभूमि पर परखे। गोपाल राय ने अज्ञेय के उपन्यासों को उपन्यास की सैद्धान्तिकी के आधार पर देखते हुए उसके विश्लेषण को व्यावहारिक धरातल पर उकेरा है। यह पुस्तक वस्तुत: अज्ञेय के उपन्यासों की व्याख्या के क्रम में एक आरम्भिक मूल्यांकन का प्रयास है। अज्ञेय का उपन्यास-संसार मूल रूप में ‘शेखर : एक जीवनी’ (भाग-एक 1940 एवं भाग-दो 1944), ‘नदी के द्वीप’ (1951) और ‘अपने-अपने अजनबी’ (1961) तक विस्तृत है। आलोचक गोपाल राय ने इन्हीं उपन्यासों की रचना-भूमि पर अपनी लेखनी चलाई है। इस पुस्तक में अज्ञेय की जीवनी-रेखा, रचना परिवेश, साहित्य सम्बन्धी विचार का परिचयात्मक मूल्यांकन करते हुए; अज्ञेय के औपन्यासिक-संसार की व्यावहारिक समीक्षा लिखी गई है। ‘हिन्दी उपन्यास साहित्य में अज्ञेय का स्थान’ शीर्षक अध्याय उपन्यासकार अज्ञेय के लिए मूल्यांकन के प्रतिमान बनाने का कार्य भी करता है। इस तरह यह पुस्तक अज्ञेय के उपन्यासों के रूप और वस्तु की संरचना पर मूल्यांकन की प्राथमिक पहल करती जान पड़ती है। आशा है कि गोपाल राय की यह आलोचना कृति रचनकार अज्ञेय और उनके उपन्यासों की पड़ताल में पाठकों के बीच एक सेतु-निर्माण का कार्य करेगी।

गुजराती आदि भारतीय भाषाएँ एक विस्तृत सेमिओटिक नेटवर्क अर्थात् संकेतन-अनुबन्ध-व्यवस्था का अन्य-समतुल्य हिस्सा हैं। मूल बात ये है कि विशेष को मिटाए बिना सामान्य अथवा साधारण की रचना करने की, और तुल्य-मूल्य संकेतकों से बुनी हुई एक संकेतन-व्यवस्था रचने की जो भारतीय क्षमता है, उसका जतन होता रहे। राष्ट्रीय या अन्तरराष्ट्रीय राज्यसत्ता, उपभोक्तावाद को बढ़ावा देनेवाली, सम्मोहक वाग्मिता के छल पर टिकी हुई धनसत्ता एवं आत्ममुग्ध, असहिष्णु विविध विचारसरणियाँ/आइडियोलॉजीज़ की तंत्रात्मक सत्ता, आदि परिबलों से शासित होने से भारतीय क्षमता को बचाते हुए, उस का संवर्धन होता रहे। गुजराती में से मेरे लेखों के हिन्दी अनुवाद करने का काम सरल तो था नहीं। गुजराती साहित्य की अपनी निरीक्षण परम्परा तथा सृजनात्मक लेखन की धारा बड़ी लम्बी है और उसी में से मेरी साहित्य तत्त्व-मीमांसा एवं कृतिनिष्ठ तथा तुलनात्मक आलोचना की परिभाषा निपजी है। उसी में मेरी सोच प्रतिष्ठित (एम्बेडेड) है। भारतीय साहित्य के गुजराती विवर्तों को ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य में जाने बिना मेरे लेखन का सही अनुवाद करना सम्भव नहीं है, मैं जानता हूँ। इसीलिए इन लेखों का हिन्दी अनुवाद टिकाऊ स्नेह और बड़े कौशल्य से जिन्होंने किया है, उन अनुवादक सहृदयों का मैं गहरा ऋणी हूँ। ये पुस्तक पढ़नेवाले हिन्दीभाषी सहृदय पाठकों का सविनय धन्यवाद, जिनकी दृष्टि का जल मिलने से ही तो यह पन्ने पल्लवित होंगे।
