वह दुधिया पानी में थोड़ा झुक गया, जैसे कि वह विशाल जलधारा उसके ऊपर ही चढ़ी आ रही थी और उसको निर्दयता से कुचले दे रही थी, उसकी सुषुप्ति से। वह बहुत जोर-जोर से हिलने लगा, जैसे उसको दौरा आ गया हो और उसकी बंदूक हाथ से छूटकर गिर पड़ी। वह अपने भय से लड़ा, अपने को सीधा किया तथा पानी में अपनी बंदूक खोजने लगा और फिर उसे पुनः वापस पा लिया। उसने अपने बैकपैक को बाएँ कंधे की ओर कर लिया, जिससे उसके घायल टखने को कुछ आराम मिल सके। फिर वह धीरे-धीरे दर्द से सिकुड़ते हुए आगे तट की ओर बढ़ने लगा।

पिछले दो-तीन दशकों में हिन्दी नवजागरण और हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन पर केन्द्रित अध्ययनों ने हिन्दी लोकवृत्त की हमारी समझ को निश्चित ही समृद्ध किया है। लेकिन जहाँ तक हिन्दी के भाषाई संगठनों का सवाल है तो ये अध्ययन हिन्दीभाषी क्षेत्र के इन भाषाई संगठनों के समूचे वजूद को प्रायः भाषायी राजनीति के चश्मे से ही देखते हैं। कहना न होगा कि ऐसा कोई भी मूल्यांकन उन भाषायी संगठनों की बहुआयामी गतिविधियों के आकलन का एक संकीर्ण और सीमित नजरिया है। ऐसे मूल्यांकनों में इन भाषायी संगठनों की वह भूमिका परिदृश्य से ओझल हो जाती है, जो वे हिन्दी लोकवृत्त में ज्ञानोत्पादन की प्रक्रिया में निभा रहे थे। इसलिए मौजूदा पुस्तक में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन का इतिहास लिखते हुए उसे सिर्फ भाषा की राजनीति या हिन्दी-नागरी आन्दोलन में हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की भूमिका तक ही सीमित नहीं किया गया है, बल्कि हिन्दी साहित्य सम्मेलन की बहुआयामी गतिविधियों और हिन्दी लोकवृत्त में ज्ञान के सृजन में सम्मेलन के योगदान को समग्रता से विश्लेषित करने का प्रयास भी इसमें हुआ है।
