अखंड भारत के भूखंड सिंध की मिट्टी में पल्लवित-पुष्पित कहानियाँ ही प्रमुख रूप से सिंधी कहानियों की अविरल बहती धारा का उद्गम बिंदु है। सिंधु नदी की निर्मल जलधारा की भाँति ही सिंधी कहानियाँ भी अपनी गति के साथ निर्बाध रूप से बह रही हैं। भारत-विभाजन के भूचाल से सिंध का सामाजिक, सांस्कृतिक व भौगोलिक ताना-बाना तहस-नहस हो गया। सिंध का हिंदू समाज निर्वासित हो गया। निर्वासन की इस पीड़ा का प्रभाव सिंधी कहानियों के विकास की गति पर भी पड़ा। सिंधी समाज का हर वर्ग खंडित भारत भूखंड में ‘अटो, लटो, अझो’, अर्थात् रोटी, कपड़ा और मकान के चक्कर में फँस गया। इससे लेखक वर्ग भी अछूता न रहा, उनका जीवन भी प्रभावित हुआ।
कुछ ही वर्षों के अंतराल में कहानी लेखन की गति फिर बढ़ने लगी। अब कहानी जगत् के विषय भी अनेक थे। सिंध की भूमि से प्रेम, बिछोह, यादें, दर्द, पीड़ा, सरकारी निर्णय की निंदा के साथ-साथ विस्थापितों के कैंप में रहने के अनुभव, स्थानीय समाज के व्यवहार, संबंध, जीवन की संवेदनाएँ, कोमल व कठोर भावनाएँ सिंधी लेखक की कहानियों के विषय बने हैं।
