भारतीय कथाकारों में कमलेश्वर की लोकप्रियता का कोई जवाब नहीं। न तो उनसे पहले, न ही उनके बाद वैसी लोकप्रियता किसी और को हासिल हो सकी। उन्होंने आरंभ में ही ‘दूरदर्शन’ में लोकप्रिय कार्यक्रम ‘परिक्रमा’ शुरू किया। बाद में ‘दूरदर्शन’ के महानिदेशक भी बने। आँधी, मौसम, डाक बँगला, द बर्निंग ट्रेन, राम-बलराम जैसी सौ के करीब फिल्में और चंद्रकांता संतति जैसे तमाम सीरियल लिखनेवाले कमलेश्वर ने ‘सारिका’, ‘कथायात्रा’, ‘गंगा’ और ‘श्रीवर्षा’ जैसी पत्रिकाओं का संपादन किया। जीवन के आखिरी समय तक अखबारों में कॉलम लिखनेवाले कमलेश्वर की कलम उनके हाथ से कभी छूटी नहीं। कमलेश्वर की पहली कहानी ‘फरार’ सन् 1946 में कानपुर से प्रकाशित होने वाले साप्ताहिक ‘जय भारत’ में छपी थी, जबकि ‘कॉमरेड भारती’ सन् 1948 में छपी, जिसे उनकी पहली कहानी मान लिया गया था। उन्होंने ढेर सारी कहानियाँ लिखीं, जिनमें से उनकी कुछ लोकप्रिय कहानियाँ इस संग्रह में प्रस्तुत हैं। कहानियाँ अलग-अलग आस्वाद लिये हुए हैं। आशा है सुधी पाठकों को ये कहानियाँ रुचेंगी और अपनी सी लगेंगी।
